People at Skidmore

Hey guys, I'm considering skidmore college. The thing is, I'm really not that artsy of a person. I don't do anything art-related except playing saxophone in my high school jazz band. There aren't many artsy people in my school and the few who are, I've never really talked to much. I am not a hipster at all. Overall I'm basically an alien to the world of artsiness and hipsterdom. So I'm worried I won't fit in at skidmore.

I'm a sciencey person. I'm almost certain I want to major in science and most of the classes I take will probably be science/math. I know skimdore actually has a great science department, but I still get the feeling that skidmore will be a weird place for a really sciencey person to go. I feel like most of the science majors are artists who have an interest in science on the side, and are probably double majoring in the humanities or something. Or it's just athletes doing exercise science.

I know skidmore has a big jock contingent but I really can't see myself fitting in with athletes.

So to summarize, is skidmore an ok place for non-artists as well?

My son is a freshman at Skidmore, planning on majoring in Chemistry. He absolutely loves his classes and the school. There are all kinds of people at Skidmore, and always a lot of different things to do. My other son, who is completely different, is now also considering Skidmore. I cannot say enough good about his experience, with his classes, and everything else!

@ Jamiecl … My son is going to enter Skidmore as a freshman in September. He hopes to major in chemistry. I noticed in the requirements that the physics is calculus based… Is this difficult as compared to introductory physics at most schools is not calculus based.
One other question… There is a language requirement . My son remembers next to nothing in Spanish. ( last took a course two years ago). I know there is a placement exam for any language. Would it just be advisable to start with a new language (Italian 1 or German 1) so that a more advanced Spanish course is avoided ( as well as the bad grade that may follow )?

Although my son took AP calc in hs, he has taken two calc classes this year, he will take physics next year. This year he has taken bio 1 and 2, and chem 1 and 2(for science classes). Next year he’ll take physics and organic chem. He took Spanish 4 in hs, but will take a different language, I can’t remember what he decided. He is loving Skidmore, has met so many great people, and loves his classes.

I was wondering about this too. Thanks for the information.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Does anyone have anything to say about just being non-artsy in general, and not specifically a science major? I know that skidmore has good science but I’m really just worried about the fact that I’m not an artist or hipster or anything

My son is not a jock or an art/hipster person and loves Skidmore.
