People disappointed in child’s application choices

Update: No more disappointment comments from any family or acquaintances. Scholarship season has began and my daughter has applied for a full scholarship at Howard (Bison Stem Scholars) which would be great if she gets selected to interview (we will find out in 2 weeks) She is also finishing up full ride scholarship application to Florida A&M University which should be done in the next couple of days. We visited North Carolina A&T University for Scholars Day which was great. The campus, dorms, students and overall atmosphere was amazing and the school went from not being mentioned to a top 3 contender. Our tour guide was choosing from jobs in Silicon Valley and our entire family was wowed at what NC&AT had to offer. We also visited the University of Georgia which was at the bottom of my daughter’s list (only 1 hour from home) but she was pleasantly surprised by UGA (food, people, and top notch resources). UGA (15K) is now a suitable safety if she doesn’t get enough money from her top schools. Tulane’s full financial aid package is in and we would be on the hook for our EFC (22.5K) a year. She received 25K per year scholarship from Hampton which would make the sticker price about 12K per year. Hampton is the only school we haven’t visited and I don’t think we will make it before March 1st (she has to accept scholarship by that date). She has applied to a few smaller outside scholarships but I can tell she is wearing down. We will visit Georgia Tech (16K) soon since it isn’t to far (40 minutes) and she hopes to have a decision in early April on where she is going. Here are her top rankings if the finances are equal. She will probably be going to one of the schools below.

  1. Howard 2a.Tulane 2b. NC&AT 4.FAMU
  2. UGA
  3. Hampton
  4. Georgia Tech
  5. Xavier (XULA)
