Post 383…I think!

She got accepted EA to GT.

My daughter did get accepted to Georgia Tech. It has been an amazing application season for her. The hard part is just beginning (financial aid/Scholarship season).

Oh, the financial aid/scholarship part is not a season, it is a never ending task. Add in taxes, and it’s a full time job.

For financial aid help. Scholarship for Chemistry related majors. It is for all 4 years. One of my sons was awarded this scholarship. And the financial aid app (FAFSA) is also for all 4 years, it even exists for grad and professional school. NEVER ends.

On another note I am also the proud mama of an NC A&T grad. Loved the school, the academics, the school spirit and the cafeteria…best food ever. A&T’s nano-engineering school and program are cutting edge, son graduated with a mech e degree and has been employed as an aircraft design engineer and now works as director of eng after a few short years after grad and he attributes much to his time at A&T.

Other son was also admitted to GA Tech with a very large scholarship, but after looking at his other choices (MIT, Cal-Tech,Duke) he ended up somewhere that was a reachy reach and changed his life substantially…way outside his comfort zone.He went from being a math/geeky student to a leader I never suspected was possible. He is still best friends with his undergrad/college roommates and friends. He too attributes his undergrad for setting him on his path.

Of course, it is possible they both could have had this happen no matter where they went but I do believe fit was a great influence.

Good luck to your daughter and you!!

@katwkittens Thank you for the links which will definitely help in the search to defray the costs of a college education. We will be visited North Carolina A&T next week for their Scholars Day and will hopefully get great news on the scholarship front. Like you, I believe fit is so important. She is curious to visit because she probably knows the least about A&T out of all of the schools she applied to. Your kids sound amazing and I love soaking up the wisdom from CC’s superstar parents such as yourself.

Update: No more disappointment comments from any family or acquaintances. Scholarship season has began and my daughter has applied for a full scholarship at Howard (Bison Stem Scholars) which would be great if she gets selected to interview (we will find out in 2 weeks) She is also finishing up full ride scholarship application to Florida A&M University which should be done in the next couple of days. We visited North Carolina A&T University for Scholars Day which was great. The campus, dorms, students and overall atmosphere was amazing and the school went from not being mentioned to a top 3 contender. Our tour guide was choosing from jobs in Silicon Valley and our entire family was wowed at what NC&AT had to offer. We also visited the University of Georgia which was at the bottom of my daughter’s list (only 1 hour from home) but she was pleasantly surprised by UGA (food, people, and top notch resources). UGA (15K) is now a suitable safety if she doesn’t get enough money from her top schools. Tulane’s full financial aid package is in and we would be on the hook for our EFC (22.5K) a year. She received 25K per year scholarship from Hampton which would make the sticker price about 12K per year. Hampton is the only school we haven’t visited and I don’t think we will make it before March 1st (she has to accept scholarship by that date). She has applied to a few smaller outside scholarships but I can tell she is wearing down. We will visit Georgia Tech (16K) soon since it isn’t to far (40 minutes) and she hopes to have a decision in early April on where she is going. Here are her top rankings if the finances are equal. She will probably be going to one of the schools below.

  1. Howard 2a.Tulane 2b. NC&AT 4.FAMU
  2. UGA
  3. Hampton
  4. Georgia Tech
  5. Xavier (XULA)

.

Call Hampton and ask for an extension on accepting that scholarship. You can say your daughter hasn’t made a matriculation decision yet, and wishes to keep her options open.

@thumper1 Thank you for that suggestion. We will give them a call because it can not hurt. An one month extension would give my daughter enough time to see everything clearly.

@ChangetheGame, I live in the DC area and there has been much reporting about the financial and accreditation issues at Howard. It’s really sad; Howard has been such a legendary institution in this area – so do some research and ask careful questions. One of my former colleagues went to Howard for accounting and raved about his experience there. I’m so glad your D is getting so many merit awards – she will have some tough decisions to make. She’s done an excellent job assembling her list and hitting the sweet spot for $$ and great programs!

@CountingDown I have a family member who is a freshman at Howard and close family in the area so they have talked about issues with HU’s finances (mainly the hospital connected to the school), but I have been hearing that things are looking better recently. I haven’t heard or seen anything with accreditation which would be worrisome so I will look into that for sure. If the money works, Howard is going to be hard to beat in my daughter’s eyes, but I will definitely be watching out for potential problems. Thank you for the advice.

That’s good news to hear, and glad you have first-hand info as well.

Final Update: My daughter was chosen as a Bison Stem Scholar at Howard which is a full ride through undergrad and will work with her towards her goal of getting a terminal degree. She will go to summer school at Howard this summer (2 classes) with the 2nd cohort of scholars and will go to Germany for 18 days for a seminar once summer school is completed. The family that was not happy with the selection of schools is now over the moon happy with the end results of this process. My daughter really liked Georgia Tech and moved it up to #2 on her final list but she never took Howard off of #1 from her 1st time visiting the campus last summer. I have learned some things from this 1st journey through the college application process and I want to thank the CC family for the encouragement, thoughts, and the questioning of her/my judgement because it helped our family validate that my daughter’s reasoning was sound. Her final list…

  1. Howard (will attend)
  2. Georgia Tech
  3. Tulane
  4. North Carolina A&T

CONGRATULATIONS!!
Isn’t it a relief that the whole college application process is finished AND your DD is being PAID to go to college!!!

@menloparkmom I can not believe how much relief that I actually feel. Now it is time to complete the prom and graduation preparations.

have fun!

Fantastic! Congratulations!!!

Many congrats to your D! Glad the rest of the family is supporting her decision-making process. Now she knows they all have her back, and that will help her soar.

@ChangeTheGame congrats. Please make sure to triple check the merit $ is consistently posted to your account at Howard. Friend had to go back to the campus from the airport on move in day because bill showed “open”. Her daughter was a full scholarship recipient. I personally know several that have had $ and housing issues at Howard. Do your research while still time.

@camcam2022 I definitely know the game when it comes to HBCUs (my wife and I) and I have family who are graduates of Howard, family at the school currently, family close enough to Howard to drive up to the campus daily and I have direct (cell) contact for the head of the scholarship program and others in that office. I have done the research and my daughter has made her choice, so I am going to make sure that nothing interrupts my daughters plans. I started checking the Bison Web Portal daily a few weeks ago and will continue to do so until every single document needed to matriculate at Howard is posted and every dollar is accounted for. Thanks for the warning because if you are not ready, you will get burned.
