I am trying to study and the smell of Subway and the sound of munching is very distracting. Do not people realize that?

I eat dinner in the library all the time…but I really don’t think I’m that loud, and I stay out of the silent areas…

People are actually allowed to eat in college libraries?!!

My…times certainly have changed since I was an undergrad 10+ years ago.

Does your college allow eating in the libraries? Sometimes there are zones where eating is or is not allowed. If eating is not allowed as a general rule in the area you’re in, complain to the librarians. It’s about your productivity.

However, if eating is allowed, then unfortunately get used to it or find another place to study.

I frequently ate Subway at the library when everywhere else was full. I stayed in the “noisy” areas though, and didn’t buy anything too pungent.

Food and drink is allowed in the 24-hour study lounge at the IU Library - it’s become pretty common at colleges. Encourages students to make use of the facilities (who can study all night without a drink/snack?) and it’s not exactly rocket science to responsibly eat and drink around books. College students don’t need to be treated like kindergarteners.

Heck, they sold food in my library. Nothing great, just some pre made salads, sandwiches, and sushi. It was part of the coffee bar.

Get earplugs if you’re distracted while studying.

When i went to a residential college, there was a Starbucks and some other little eatery in the basement of the library. At the school I go to now, there are fully stocked vending machines right outside the library doors and restaurants not five minutes away.

I eat in the library all the time. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal, really.

They sell all kinds of food at my school’s library. We have four floors and while we can eat in any any of them, the fourth floor is the ‘quiet’ floor so people rarely ever eat there. If they’re eating anything, it’s a granola bar of some sort so it doesn’t make a lot of noises. And yeah, it can be annoying to study and have distractions around you. Some people can do it, but I’m like you and I can’t focus when that happens.

I’m surprised not only because I’ve seen many older adults who aren’t able to eat without creating a giant mess…but also because allowing food in the library increases the chances of pest infestations which could accelerate the deterioration of library collections.

In this instance, it has much more to do with trying to minimize deterioration of library collections and minimizing the pest-control bills.

The answer, Jetson, is either no or they don’t care. Welcome to the real world.
If food isn’t allowed, turn them in.
If food is allowed, study elsewhere.

if you are distracted, buy subway and eat it in the library

Food isn’t allowed in my college library. I still eat in there anyways, LOL.

you should walk up to them, slap the sandwich out of their hand, turn around and walk away.

In one of your previous posts, you mentioned that you were a freshman here at UC Davis. Food is not allowed anywhere in the library, so you are allowed to inform the librarians that someone is consuming food in the building.
