I've been told there's a sizable number out there who look at Fordham as "the poor third" after Columbia and NYU. Is there any truth to this? And what do you think, folks?

Oh please. Is Tufts “the poor third after Harvard and MIT” (or BC for that matter)? Pitting one college after another is a fool’s errand, in my humble opinion.

While some will be superficial and point solely to USNWR rankings as “proof” of their prognostication-opinion, and certainly Fordham is not a member of the Ivy League like Columbia, I would just suggest that you examine each school on their own merits. Each school is an individual institution with pluses and minuses. No school is perfect. Fordham, NYU and Columbia are all unique schools. But they have alumni from each school teaching at each school, and even have administrators from each school. Each school welcomes graduates from the others for graduate programs and professional programs.

And most importantly each school holds the others in high esteem. Just ask them.

Do they compete for students? Yes.

So please just look at Fordham on its own merits and make your decision accordingly. Fordham students, alumni, faculty and administrators all prize greatly the Jesuit tradition at Fordham.

Fordham students are proud of their university.

No, don’t get me wrong. I didn’t raise the point as if I believed it, or needed to be convinced otherwise. My son is going to Fordham this fall, he doesn’t care about whatever others say or feel about the school of his choice. I just don’t understand why others waste energy pitting schools/students against each other.

Because when they’re all basically the same price… compare Fordham to NYU and Columbia. Just doesn’t make sense… Plus Fordham is in the distant Bronx, while NYU and Columbia are right in the city.

I guess Fordham LC disappeared?

I would assume Fordham and NYU would be more comparable. Columbia is in its own playing field.
Though if you take a glance at UrbanDictionary (for laughs, of course); then some would argue that Pace is for Fordham rejects Fordham is for NYU rejects and NYU is for Columbia rejects and Columbia is for Princeton rejects and Princeton is for Harvard rejects. Which pretty much equates to, you can’t please everyone. Some people will think Fordham is the most amazing place while other people may turn their nose up at it. However, you’re going to school for an education not a gilded diploma.

In any case, it shouldn’t matter. It’s ranked 60th (or something like that) our of 4,146 colleges in the country—not including community or trade schools.

That said, to actually answer your question: in my experience, outside of NYC, Fordham receives a ‘better reputation.’ Anytime I’m caught wearing a Fordham sweatshirt in Florida or someplace, I usually get questions like “Do you really go to Fordham? Wow.”
