People looking at Bates College also liked

Well,
I’m trying to narrow down my college list. I’ll put down the schools that I am interested in, keeping in mind that I suppose they are in some ways attractive in the same ways Bates is. Some are reach-schools for me, others maybe are not-- in fact, I don’t really know. But anyway here they are:

Brown, Dartmouth, Haverford, Wesleyan, Bowdoin, Hamilton, Colby, Colorado College, Whitman, Carleton, Kenyon.

Anyone have any other suggestions? If you like Bates, what other schools are you looking at?

Middlebury, Grinnell

Macalester, Carleton

basically any liberal arts college and schools like dartmouth

well, besides some of the ones already mentioned, I also went for Colgate, Swarthmore, Lafayette, Williams.

according to a college guide i have, people who looked at bates also looked at:
*tougher admissions: amherst, bowdoin, dartmouth, haverford, middlebury, tufts, wesleyan, williams
*similar admissions: boston college, colby, colgate, connecticut college, hamilton, vassar
*easier admissions: bard, dickinson, kenyon, skidmore, smith (if female)

trinity, wesleyan, holy cross, kenyon, hamilton, bowdoin, colby. for some reaches: dartmouth, brown, amherst

vassar, colby, bowdoin

Hamilton, Colgate, Colby, Trinity and maybe Washing&Lee

connecticut college... had a hard time deciding which to enroll at...

I also applied to Colby and Connecticuit College as well as five UC's.

Just so everyone knows, academically Bates is waaaay better than Conneticut College. The atmosphere there is just different.

hahahahaha premedwannabe- thanks for my laugh of the day!

But I am going to Bates.......yay bates 2010. And anyway, does anyone understand the whole camel thing....at least a bobcat makes sense...wait, are there even bobcats in Maine?

^^^ hahahaha yeah, the camels dont really make much sense (<a href="http://www.conncoll.edu/aboutcc/traditions/camels.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.conncoll.edu/aboutcc/traditions/camels.html</a> and <a href="http://www.conncoll.edu/aboutcc/traditions/why-the-camels.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.conncoll.edu/aboutcc/traditions/why-the-camels.html</a> give 2 explanations), but at least a camel is interesting. the nyu VIOLETS??? the harvard CRIMSON??? the tufts JUMBOS?
even your rival, the colby MULES????
i'd rather be a camel than any of those!!!

<a href="http://www.sprucemtn.com/bobcat.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.sprucemtn.com/bobcat.htm</a></p>

See the link above. Yes, there are bobcats in Maine.

We all know Bates is better than Connecticut College. Just give up huskem (jk). But, I also notice that a lot of the NESCAC schools have strange mascots. Bowdoin Polar Bears, Williams Ephs... but Camels is the strangest, I think.
I think Conn. and Bates are similar, but when given the choice, most people would choose Bates. Bates is such an awesome school.
And yeah, of course there are bobcats in Maine!

If reputation is anything to go by, Bates is may be slightly better than Conn in terms of academics. Bates may pride itself on its rigorous academics, but Conn's isn't weak either. But there are so many other factors to consider, such as location, financial aid, courses available, whether or not there are any singaporeans there or going there. I chose Conn in the end, though it was really a hairspliting decision. And I sometimes do look back and ask myself if I really made the right decision, to choose an arguably more prestigious college over another that's not even listed in CC's top LACs (why not, btw? surely Conn is comparable to Kenyon and Washington&Lee, or at least Whitman? besides, every other school in NESCAC is listed it's not very nice to leave CC out, especially when it has the same abbreviation as this forum.)

But I've made my choice. And I shall live with it. Besides I am not the only one. According to the sample size used in Revealed Preference Rankings, Conn won 48% of the cross-admit wars between Conn and Bates, with Conn ranking at 58th, Bates 59th and Colby is at a distant 71th overall.

It's hard to deny that Bates is slowly climbing up the prestige ladder whereas Conn is on the decline though. If USNEWS rankings mean anything, Conn fell from 24th to 36th over the past 10 years, just as fast as they rose from 40th into mid-20s the decade before that (which was commendable for a school barely 70+ years old back then). You can probably attribute that to bad investments, unshrewd presidents and lousy media publications (the website and college prospectus are unattractive, to say the least). But I think the new president looks very promising and will lead Conn on its rebound and scaling of greater heights!

Yeah I must admit I was a little averse to the strange mascot initially but I'm beginning to find it somewhat cute.

i agree woebegone with alot of what you said- in the cc "top lac" forum, there are schools that are MUCH easier to get into than conn, and conn is at least, if not better than, several in academic quality.
also, i have no clue why conns ranking is so low- its ranked 25th in admissions selectivity, 26th in retention/graduation rate, 32nd in alumni giving, and extremely well respected among grad school admissions committees, as well as high school guidance counselors and admissions counselors at other schools (i have close contact with several).
i think the issue is with the budget- the president who left in 2004, while she trippled the endowment, made horrible investments in the new london community. her replacement was very dull. hopefully the new guy will put conn back where it belongs, in the 20s.
regardless, all the important people know the quality of conn, as well as the other less known nescac schools (dont fool your selves bates, colby, hamilton, trinity- outside of new england, no one has heard of you either)!

almost all the NESCACs, except maybe Amherst or Williams (no ones really knows that one either), are not very well known outside of NE. CC probably has the worst rep. of the NESCACs, it just is that way-- it still is a great school! But Bates, really, seems to be better one.
