People really get tickets for Jaywalking?

I've heard from people at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign that police actually give out tickets for jaywalking. I didn't even know jaywalking was illegal.

Yeah it sucks. It seems like once a year, the my universities police decide to start issuing jaywalking tickets for a few weeks

I actually got a jaywalking ticket once in Queens. I was probably 14, and I took the train down to Queens from Manhattan to see my Uncle, and after my Uncle and I met up, we proceeded to get back to Manhattan when we suddenly got stopped by a cop and my uncle and I were actually ticketed! It was unbelievable, but the ticket was only like 30 dollars. I heard that nowadays it is more.

I’ve never gotten one, and I’ve jaywalked right in front of cops…

I witnessed someone get a jaywalking ticket. They got put up on the car, patted down, everything. It was pretty serious stuff. What was even funnier though, is that this general ******bag comes strolling across the street (also jaywalking) and he wouldnt have gotten a ticket, but he muttered “rent a cop” as he passed them so the cops gave him a ticket too and were screaming in his face and threatening to arrest him and everything. This would be 10x funnier if you knew the kid though

In most places the police won’t do anything about jaywalkers, but in some areas (read: Hanover, NH) the cops have nothing better to do.
Edit: And are totally vindictive.

Wait, seriously? I didn’t know jaywalking tickets even existed. Everyone jaywalks at my school, so the police would go insane giving tickets to everyone.

I’ve jaywalked in front of cops before and they didn’t do anything… hmm that’s pretty weird.

You can get tickets for that here, as well you should. While in many cases it totally doesn’t matter (where I am originally from you almost NEVER hear of anyone getting a jaywalking ticket), in a busy downtown area it is dangerous for pedestrians to be running out in between cars. Drivers can’t see you in that situation until you are already directly in front of their car, I have nearly killed my neighbors dog in that situation many times. While one would hope the general public are smart enough to look both ways first, often the case is that they are NOT, and it is just safer to use the crosswalk if there is enough traffic around for cops to even be present. I will jaywalk on a street that isn’t very busy but pretty much all streets here are busy during the day. In the evening it matters less.

What I find annoying here, is that even with yield to pedestrian signs and when the light signals to walk, people still refuse to stop their car for one second.

So I just cross where ever, because it really doesn’t matter. I do wait for cars because I prefer not to be hit, and I too drive quite a bit and get annoyed by people who just run out (in black clothes at midnight none the less) and make me slam on my brakes.

In Ann Arbor people don’t even watch for cars, they just step out. I VERY rarely wait for the light to change, I just move like I am going to step off the curb and everybody stops because they assume I am going to go out either way. XD If people do crap like that all over the streets there’d be fatal accidents on a daily basis. But like I said, it’s not like that where I am originally from at all. Though there is an Ikea a block away from my parents house and traffic gets so crazy there that on Saturdays there is a shuttle bus to take you from one side of the street to the other.

The cop at UIUC do actually ticket for it. I’m from Boston so the crosswalk is where I say it is. Just make sure there aren’t any Chargers or Crown Vics around when you do it (they might have an Impala or two as well)
