People to People (Future Leaders Summit)

i got this program in my mail today. It says Eisenhower's granddaughter is doing it, it is only for selected people. but i'm not sure if it's real or just a fake one. Is there anyone who has participated in this last year?

it's probably real, but not anything special. When they say that it is only for selected people, they probably mean that select people from a list they bought or something. I may be wrong, but I'd take what they said with a grain of salt.

I'm doing a program called People to People student Ambassadors this summer. I guess they are the same thing. This summer I'm going with them on a trip to Europe. They say it's for select poeple but it's not. It's just a fun trip to go on and it doesn't really do anything for you.

Ooh, I was going to do that but I missed the meeting that was at a university about 80 mi. away. How much does it cost?

Corey:
what does that quote have to do with anything? Is that the topic of the People to People conference?

It's a real program. It's special and stuff, but it's just one of those programs that if you've got the money for it, you can go...if you don't, big deal--you're not losing out on anything.

It's around $5,000 for this summer's trip to Europe it's 3 weeks, and like I said before it doesn't do anything fabulous for you. You get one class credit to use for highschool or college and that's about it.

do leadership conferences really help for anything?

generally, i think all the programs that send out letters that say "you have been selected to participate in the __________ " are just things you pay so that you can go have a new experience. I doubt that they will help for college apps or anything.

this program is about 2500 depending on the course you take, and it's like 2weeks, in DC, CAL, and a few other places.

People to People is not a special honor. Hoping to snare a few people who will pay their fees. they buy lists of names and send out mass mailings.

Checking the on-line IRS 990 filing for non-profits can give you a great deal of information about them. In 2002, PTP had 26 directors, all with obscure names other than CEO Mary Eisenhower. None were paid, except Ms. Eisenhower, who was paid nearly $140,000. While I have no beef with people making money, you shouldn't assume Ms. Eisenhower is being philanthropic.

Four other PTP employees were paid about $100,000 each. (The 990 form requires reporting of only those paid over $50,000) With program services amounting to about $2,000,000, you can quickly calculate that about 1/4 of what you pay goes right into the pockets of those five people. One other interesting tidbit from the 990: scholarships = $0.

Where did you find the IRS 990 form? I'm kind of appalled.

Guidestar.com has the info on non-profits. You'll have to register (no fee) to get the 990s, but they are very useful when checking out non-profits.

I went to europe with them several years ago... I went to ireland scotland england and wales. It was a lot of fun.. the food was great.. the sites were interesting and the hotels were awsome but the one in alberfeldy. I suggest goin.. it's fun.

its a lot of money and time... is it really worth it?

Whoops, I thought I copied the comment above mine =/ My clipboard is broken :(

well at the time i went, it wasnt too much money for my family to pay. There are also scholarship oppertunities i believe and we held fundraisers. I thought it was fun and you go in sooooo many castles and you shop alot too :D it was way cool...

I went to Australia with PTP in between 7th and 8th grade. It was a great experience. I matured a lot from the experience(granted I was only 13 and was travelling the world). PTP is definetely not something to do for a resume, because it isn't a selective process. If you are in hs, I recommend saving your money or traveling with your own high-school somewhere. PTP trips can be over $4000, and I went with my hs this summer to France and Italy for only $2000. Also, For the expensive price I paid, the amenities were okay, and we had to wear goofy looking uniforms the whole time. We did get to spend a few days as exchange students in Auckland, which was cool.

Also, you will have lots of chances to travel in college like with study abroads and stuff, so don't rush into PTP.

This letter doesn't say anything about traveling. This is what it says.
