how many people per class are there that are now doing medicine after coming from a previous career? related question, what's the average age of the students in a med class; how many 40+ yo's are there?

Not many, but that shouldn’t stop you.

The average age I believe is 24-25. I’m not in med school, but I know that there are 40+ y/o’s that do apply to and go to med school. Check out the non-trad forum on SDN:

Yes, average age for first year students is 24-25, varies on the year.

A great many med schools will have a significant though not huge number of students who are 27+, though obviously there are very few who come in older than 40. I believe the oldest person in my class was about 35 when we started, but the classes both ahead and behind me each had 2-3 students older than 45.

At your top ten research schools, those sorts of students are probably fewer.

You will see many students who took time off (usually 1-2 years) after college to be teachers, consultants, researchers, etc. You’re not going to see very many 40 year olds.

If all goes as planned, I will be 43 when I start med school. Pretty funny to be thought of as old! Years as a nurse practitioner has motivated me to go for the MD – I want to play with the big boys!
