I have the same book because a close relative of mine has his essay in one of the versions of it and he said that they basically went around asking admitted kids if anyone wanted their essays published.</p>
<p>In either case, I don’t think it’s wrong to read essays - heck, I read a ton before I wrote mine (though admittedly, they were actually pretty interesting to read), but I don’t think you should be taking format, structure, etc. and using them selectively in your own essays which is what OP seems to imply.</p>
