i would not say it would kill your chances but it does not look that great to get a B in a class that defines your major and esp if it is micro. if it was macro, then there probably would have been less of a negative effect. but getting one B is not going to kill you because there are other things that ucla considers for admission besides gpa. they actually read your essays and look at what you do besides school. for bus econ, it would be best to get A's in the accting classes because bus econ is "business" because of the slight emphasis on accting.

It won't necessarily kill your chances but getting a B in a prereq, especially like pinkwallflower said, in a course that defines your major, doesn't look very good. Just keep your head up and ace everything else.

No a couple of B's, even a C won't kill your chances... as long as you are in the TAP program. For a non-TAP student, a C is a death sentence. A B is alright, as long as you don't have too many. I'd say 2-3 B's should be the limit for non-TAP students.

From what I've observed from both my friends and fellow forumites,
many 3.7 GPA's with TAP are accepted while some 3.6's with TAP are accepted as well. The chances that a student with a GPA below 3.6, even with TAP, being accepted are pretty slim. If you are not enrolled in the TAP program and don't plan to be, (although there exists no good excuse, other than the direst of time constraints, why you shouldn't be) you should shoot for a GPA that is above their average admit GPA. Last year it was 3.82, but it should have gone up this year as there has been an upward trend.

My friend who's in TAP got a B in English and calc 1 and A's in the rest of his prereqs but was rejected.

no offense to oorah87 and those who actually signed the TAP agreement but i personally do not think that having a TAP agreement makes that much of a difference. if you get a C and a lot of B's it is extremely unlikely to be accepted to ucla even with a TAP. all a TAP does it put your file on top of everyone else's but unless your file really shines, another file at the bottom will get that admission spot. i did not get the TAP because there really wasn't anytime for me to do so with my heavy course load but i got in with a overall gpa of 3.7 ish. instead of solely focusing on taking a lot of honors classes and getting TAP, i would focus on making your application very well rounded to show who you are, that you are not only academically strong but also have something else...only that can give you a greater advantage over everyone, because anyone can work hard and be super smart. and i do not know how relevant this fact is but now more than ever, business is really pushing an emphasis on ETHICS (my recent business and accounting textbook talked a lot about ethics compared to previous editions), so it is good for you to personally have a good moral code and maybe to glaze over this in your essay?

pinkwallflower, sorry, I'm not sure if I asked before but what ECs and work experience did you have? I always hear UCLA doesn't really care about that stuff (more emphasis on GPA and completion of prereqs) while Cal does.

I don't think a B will kill you. Far from it, imo. I got a B in Microecon AND I was transferring from a Cal State (and transferring from a 4-yr university to a UC is kinda hard, I hear. :))
