people with outstanding stats scare me

do you think i can get into Rice? I really want to go, but i'm not outstanding like most people out there :| well at least on this website

Asian Female
REALLY competitive HS in CA

unweighted gpa= 3.7 (i had a really bad GPA in freshman year then i improved each year and had a 4.0 both semesters last year yay)
weighted GPA= i think 3.9

SAT1 (2160)
math=740
CR=640
writing=780
i retook it october and i think i did pretty well

SAT2:
chem-720
bio-740
math2c-760
chinese-800

APs
chinese-5
stats-5
biology-4

planning on taking ap calc bc, ap physics, ap english lit this may

ECs- marching band for 4 years, have been playing clarinet for 9 years and completed level 10(highest level) for certificate of merit, 4 years on swim team, went to COSMOS this summer and did research on global warming. i think i'm going to write my personal statement on that.

i REALLY want to go to rice and i got an interview there already

You'll have a good chance at Rice. Nothing's for certain anymore though.

thanks :) anyone else have any opinions? oh and i forgot to mention that i'm applying early

We are competing against each other. I have higher SAT, GPA. I have one more AP(different subjects) than you and you have better ECs.

Out of state students will have higher chances next year, since Rice is adding 700 more undergrads, and very few of them will come from Texas.

^

The additional students will be phased on over several years so don't anyone think there will be 700 additional students on campus next year.

I wish Rice would wait until they have enough on campus housing before they keep adding students. They are adding a couple of new dorms but still Rice doesn't guarantee housing all 4 years.

We almost have the same application..lol. I just have a slightly better scores, but everything else is pretty much the same. I was in marching band, clarinet too!

Hope we all make it phade + YellowWoman!

yeah they aren't immediately increasing the class size by 700, their slowly going to increase it and try to get the undergraduate "size" to around 3,500- even after this increase they will be the smallest comprehensive research university in the US.

Nothing you listed will keep you out of Rice. If you want it, take a chance and apply. Otherwise, you'll never know.

phade: i just looked at your profile and your ECs are really good!
i hate my extracurriculars, i wish i had been more ambitious and i wish i didn't screw up my freshman year GPA. oh well. its too late now. and thanks you guys have really boosted my self-esteem. on mychances.net it said that i have a 30% chance of getting in lol :(

Don't listen to mychances... it's stupid.

Yellowwoman: They aren't that great, really. I've got some awards/honors that I'm pretty proud of but my EC's themselves aren't very strong, at least I don't think they are.

hey just wondering, but should i be happy or sad that i got a 2290 on my SAT (2360 superscore yay) but i have a C in ap physics, b in ap english, and maybe a b in band cause i forgot to turn in my practice sheet LOL :[ and i have to send in a quarter report for early decision.

does rice look @ super score?

Yes you should be a little concerned, first quarter grades are used for admission and colleges really seem to not like a downward trend (which I imagine a C and multiple b's is).
