Pepperdine or UCSB??

I got into both schools, which should I go to??
Money is not a factor in the decision??
I am interested in history...
I live exactly one hour from both schools, and plan to live in the dorms...

How much do you value academics versus social life?
UCSB and Pepperdine are on opposite ends of the college spectrum.

ucsb no question. better school, better ranked programs, less money (even if you dont care, its still money in your bank). even if the schools were the same price, ucsb is simply a finer institution, whith some top programs. look at history rankings, i would imagine ucsb has a much finer history department than pepperdine. i would also imagine ucsb would place you into a finer graduate school than pepperdine.

Uh Chris...

SB has a better rep, but it also has like 10% classes fewer than 20 vs. 50% greater than 50. That's not cool.

I'd always go with a private college over a public. You'll learn more. Also, Pepperdine has just as good of a rep.

are you a fundamentalist christian? are you okay with not partying? are you okay with going to bed at 10 pm? do you value your faith and your religion? then pepperdine.

anything else, UCSB

i know tons of big partiers from my high school at pepperdine.

Pepperdine is the better school. Hands down.

Pepperdine without a doubt.

Haha, there're so many blatantly conflicting viewpoints. To make it easier for the OP, why not post all the reasons you think Pepperdine/UCSB are better/worse institutions like a couple of posters have?

University of California, Santa Barbara. Better location, academics are about the same (I'd say they have the edge) and they aren't a christian school.

lol and props on your last reason :)

Pepperdine.

Better Location (if you want to study, proximity to LA)
Better Facilities (buildings and dorms)
Better Faculty
Better Students (look at the averages)
Better Academics (student/faculty ratio, class size)
Better Sports (powerhouse in a lot of sports)
Better national name recognition

It seems pretty obvious to me.

Oh, and to the posters making fun of Pepperdine for being a Christian school: You have yet to show ANY PROOF that a religious foundation hinders an education.

Oh, and to the posters making fun of Pepperdine for being a Christian school: You have yet to show any proof that a religious foundation IN ANYWAY hinders an education.

If you are an athiest it DEFINITELY hinders your education.

You have to take three courses on religious topics (history mostly) and attend convocations (which are/n't about religious topics). If these minimal requirements offend you, you probably shouldn't attend. However, for the rest of the nation (a high percentage of Americans), Pepperdine offers the best education.

Go to USCB!

whoever states pepperdine has better stats tha ucsb is out of their mind. check the averages, ucsb has significantly better averages, inlcuding almost a 4.0 average gpa and a 12hundred and something old sat, pepperdine cannot compare. all these people argueing for pepperdine are clearly pepperdine students or alumni. pepperdine is not considered in the same league as ucsb. even argueing over this is hillarious, acidemically and socially there is not even a contest. and to top it off pepperdine is more expensive. so check the stats before making crazy statements like pepperdine students have higher stats, that is absolutely ridiculous. the only reason people can say pick pepperdine is that someone would always pick the private school. that is absolutely ridiculous. ill go to ucla or ucsd, and you can go to chapman then. make sure and choose your private school. people argueing pepperdine is better than ucsb have got to be kidding.

"Academically there is not even a contest" What!?! According to Princeton Review, Pepperdine's average SAT score is 1240, compared to UCSB's 1182. The website also reports that it is more difficult to get into Pepperdine. The US News and World Report ranks UCSB 45th and Pepperdine 55th. Therefore, comparing these two schools is justified. Both schools are highly regarded. It just depends on what statistics you are looking at.

I would also like to say that picking the public school is not always the right choice either. There are UVAs and UMichs, but there are also other, underfunded public schools.

I am not a Pepperdine student or alumni. I am also not "kidding." I think Pepperdine is a better school.

Fact: UCSB is not a religious university.
Fact: Pepperdine is a religious university.

haha pepperdines average gpa is far below than of ucsb.. and ucsb's average sat (old) is well above 1200. where are you getting your stats from? i never stated going to any public school was better than going to a private one, i just simply responded to the stupid statement posted earlier that some kid stated " i would go to any private over a public school." i responded by stating, "ok you go to chapman and ill go to ucsd or ucla." trust me id deffiantly choose many privates over publics, but im not ignorant enough to say something stupid like id go to any private over any public.

UCSB's average admit (2004):
3.88 GPA
1236 SAT
(<a href="http://universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/selecting/camp_profiles/camp_profiles_ucsb.html%5B/url%5D">http://universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/selecting/camp_profiles/camp_profiles_ucsb.html</a>)</p>

UCSB's average admit GPA 2005:
3.99
(<a href="http://www.ia.ucsb.edu/pa/display.aspx?pkey=1439%5B/url%5D">http://www.ia.ucsb.edu/pa/display.aspx?pkey=1439</a>)</p>

UCSB's average admit GPA 2006:
3.98
(<a href="http://www.ia.ucsb.edu/pa/display.aspx?pkey=1439%5B/url%5D">http://www.ia.ucsb.edu/pa/display.aspx?pkey=1439</a>)</p>

furthermore, remember privates schools like pepperdine compute their sat's very different from uc schools. uc schools take your one sitting, while privates like pepperdine allow your best sitting in each area of the sat on different tests to be added together to compute your score, significantly inflating its sat numbers over publics, which are not allowed to do this. ucsb has gotten more difficult to gain admittance to as its stats went up significantly these last two years, as the average admit had a 3.99 in 2005, and a 3.98 in 2006. pepperdine is not even considered academically in the same league. show me 5 top 20, or hell even top 30 programs at pepperdine. youll have trouble finding any, as it is academically not well regarded, and does not have particularly well ranked programs. im not trying to offend anyone, its just obvious pepperdine is not exactly a well regarded academic university. i doubt anyone would argue that classes at pepperdine would be near as challenging as those taught at ucsb. look further at nas memberships and nobel laureates at ucsb, and the dinstinction between the academic quality at ucsb and pepperdine becomes increasingly clearer. this conversation and debate should not even be occuring, you cannot compare a second class private school to a highly regarded national research university, and i believe the 11th or 12th best public university in the country.

and on top of all that you paying thousands upon thousands more per quarter or semester at pepperdine to go to a less well regarded academic school, which has a religious affiliation that can have an effect on numerous subjects and departments.
