What is the general reputation of Pepperdine on this thread?

Pepperdine vs U of Washington

Pepperdine is a school for rich kids. That is the reputation I know from LA. Probably good for business.

We are not rich. We are between middle class (husband has civil service management job, I have a small health care practice but am not an MD) and upper middle class financially. It would be a sacrifice for us, my husband (and I to a great extent) do not think it would be worth it, but son really wants to go. He has been waitlisted at Northwestern, which if he gets in we Have committed we will do.

I don't think it's worth it either. Northwestern might be "worth it". But University of Washington is a good school it makes more sense, Pepperdine isn't worth the extra money.

I associate Pepperdine with rich white kids who take it easy and delight in the typical "college life." An expensive price tag, to be sure, but it seems like a very superficial school where education does not hold top priority.

Source: I live a few miles from the school.

^^That is the reputation I was referring to. That is the school's reputation in the LA area.

I disagree with Pepperdine being a school for “rich white kids.” I’ve read in some magazines that it is rated as having “one of the most diverse student bodies.” Just like anywhere, about 20% of the students come from affluent families and give the school the reputation you’re referring to (that and it being a private school in a very expensive neighborhood). It’s actually pretty hard to get into- accepting about 20-30% of applicants each year. Pepperdine is a very good school and has a strong reputation. Most students stay out of trouble there and everyone I know that went there for undergraduate eventually attended graduate school. I think you should research it more before jumping to conslusions, as I did…I know a lot of people that chose Pepperdine over UCLA and UC Berkley.

Pepperdine is, like Liberty U and Gordon College, a school intended for conservative Christians who want to make it through their college years without becoming eeeeeeeevil dogma-questioning, gay-marriage-supporting, Harry-Potter-reading liiiiiiiiiberaaaaaaals.

Do you read a lot of fantasy or humor magazines??

Is this a new part of the USNWR rankings?

Are they “rich white kids”?

Just beware that most people comment on here have had very little real knowledge about Pepperdine. You need to do your own research, visit the school, talk to people who have gone there or have some real contact with the school and then form your own conclusion.

TBH, I don’t think a lot of people have chosen or will chose Pepperdine over UC’s best school. Maybe LA, but Berkeley? hmnn…

well, considering i spend tons of time in malibu, the location is great. but if you can get into pepperdine, you can also probably get into UCLA, and there is NO comparison between the two UCLA > Pepperdine in almost every respect, EXCEPT Pepperdines location ROCKS!!!

Perhaps for physical beauty and early morning surfs. For college students, I’d say there are better environments than a smallish town loaded with eccentric celebrities living in mansions behind gates hidden from a busy highway.

I know someone who attends pepperdine, she definatley loves it there. She is from seattle and did not get accepted to UW, but she felt that it was great fate that she went to pepperdine. It definatley is a school for the “rich white kids” however. My friend has TOTALLY changed after she came back from pepperdine. She used to be cultured and spoke her native language more but does not anymore. A girl that has listened to R&B now strictly listens to country music. To judge if this is good or bad is yours to characterize, she likes to school, but if you’re looking for diversity and to seek past the stereotypical “Laguna beach” type of people, it isn’t what your looking for. (as a matter of fact a few cast members of the t.v show laguna beach attended Pepperdine)

Not to mention that the school itself is on top of a mountain which requires students to have a car to go to a movie theater or pizza joint off campus.

Uh, no, Pepperdine is a much, much easier admit than UCLA.

Janey, I know one person at Pepperdine, a rich, white kid from Redmond, who is not happy there and is considering a transfer to the UW. He has found it to be socially isolating, even with his wealth and all the trappings that go with that.

An interesting side note is that this is what he ended up with after spending thousands on a private college counselor.

don’t tell my daughter that since she went to UCLA, I wouldn’t even let her apply to pepperdine becasue i knew she’d pick it becasues it’s closer to the surf! Good move for mom!~~~~~~~

Is it me or does everyone on here love to bash Pepperdine?!?!? I think people love to point out the negatives before they see the positives and it does the school an injustice. Granted some of these things are true, but in order to know if its right you need to visit the campus. I live in Washington and I’m not rich but I really want to go to a California school because I was born down there. In early February I’m flying down there again for the day to check it out! There is a reason only 30% get accepted and it is not an easy school to get into.

The only person I know who goes to Pepperdine was not a very impressive applicant. As for the person who speculated it was good for business, it probably does well in LA, but it’s not even on the radar at a national level.
