Pepperdine v LMU v SDSU

I just reread your comment! I see -
Yes we started building his college list - no school input.

We had a counselor friend, but we never talked about cost of schools.

We also were banking of good SAT scores because he is a good test taker, but after 5 cancelled tests over a 6 month period, we gave up in October!

Is the financial aid FASFA? They gave us that too but itā€™s all loans.

Every person in America gets the $5500 loan for doing fafsa. The private schools would have required the css form where they dig into your assets more. Some require IDOC which is basically you sending in w2, 1099, tax returns etc

Ha-meaning they donā€™t need to give anyone money!

Yes - itā€™s been a joy navigating this! No tests, no application feesā€¦everyone just throwing applications all over!!!

Even out counselor/friend has never seen a year like this. I kinda feel bad for them!!!

If heā€™s super uncertain, he could always take a gap year. Thatā€™s a slippery slope though. Planned organized gap years can be useful, but just lazing around can result in loss of motivation.

What is happening is school wait lists are HUGE. Because where someone may have applied to 7 schools in the past this year it was 10. Why not? TO - if you are an ace student with a 1200 SAT, youā€™d apply to USC or even Harvard. My daughter had a 32 ACT - applied to 21 schools. 20 with her score and Rice as TO.

U of AZ (yes I keep pushing it because it meets your needs, its cheap, its more pedigree than SDSU and you can get in by May 3rd - only your GPA matters - no test score considered (cheap depending on unweighted GPA).

My daughter got in UGA. Not only did they admit 2K more kids than last year (15 vs. 13K) but their waitlist is 2K.

Schools - the academics that know all - have no clue how yields will work out this year and all are massively hedging.

SDSU is an outstanding school and, no question heā€™ll be surrounded by kids that want to learn, especially if heā€™s in the honors program. In my experience, truly disinterested students stop attending class and wash out pretty quickly.

I agree with several other posters above I think youā€™d regret going into parental debt for LMU or Pepperdine.

SDSU seems like the right answer here. Iā€™d visit the school again and see if you can talk a student into giving you a tour

Where in NY are you from? We are from NY too.

Port Washington, Sea Cliff, then Manhattan and Brooklyn. You?

Truly appreciate all the info. We know you are right about $. We will work on finances today with regards to your questions. Just wondered if either of the other schools were so much better that we should make sacrifices. Sounds like they are not.

The other factor is that I have been a stay at home mom for 18 years - so I have a bit of guilt there. I could also go back to work & cover the tuition. But I need to reinvent myself because the marketing game has changed quite a bit!

Iā€™m a SDSU alum and my D22, a potential poly sci major, has SDSU on her list. First, your kid sounds great ā€” a doer and go-getter. He will be fine at SDSU, but at a large state school he needs to be self-directed and seek out the resources and opportunities he needs to be successful. That means he needs to join some career-driven clubs/organizations (ie political, newspaper, speech and debate) and work on internships. Definitely look into a semester in Washington DC, etc. One of the main benefits of honors that I see is a cohort of students that care about their education, and that they are housed together the first year. Not going to lie ā€” Greek life/parties/beach is a part of that school. But, it doesnā€™t have to be a big part and it is so fun and beautiful there. Definitely take him to look around ā€” I heard LMU has closed gates and will only allow admitted students to view if they stay in their car.

I also investigated LMU and felt like the poly sci offerings were thin. Why did your son like it? Think their real flex is film/entertainment.

No, they arenā€™t. Chasing names, and neither of those private are big names, is unwise. The reality is, success will be determined by the students engagement with the opportunities in front of them and their work ethic, no matter where the go.

Theyā€™re not.
Have you heard from Honors?
If you want smaller schools that may be more affordable, deposit at SDSU (hoping for Honors) and wait for the NACAC list in case thereā€™s something better with sufficient FA (no risk, at worst heā€™s not offered a better package or the school isnā€™t a better fit, and he still has SDSU).

Not yet!

fingers crossed!

Iā€™m confused about the Poli Sci Dept at SDSU.
I was on a call a couple of weeks ago &ā€™was told that you can not major in poli sci. There is only a certificate program.

But in their literature, it states they have a poli sci major/minor.

He liked LMUs poli sci bldg & their media programs. He may want to be a political commentator! But I was very impressed with SDSUs Media Program!

LMU also has some bio ethics programs (he did well in AP Bio and thought about medical law) and they have an Entrepreneur major he liked.

I think his love of LMU has a lot to do with having gotten a real live your last year and met people on campus.

I think he just doesnā€™t know enough about SDSU.

Respectfully I donā€™t think that can be right. Poly Sci is one of their largest departmentsā€”they even offer an MA. https://politicalscience.sdsu.edu/

I see a public law certificate ā€” perhaps thatā€™s what you remembered, since he is interested in law?
