Just thought I would throw out there that I heard that Pepperdine was starting a musical theatre program. This information is from an instrumental performance major who also acted in the musical last year. Although I am fuzzy on the details, the general idea I got was that you got a liberal arts degree with concentrations or certificates of some sort in music and theatre. This is being headed up by a man who performed on Broadway (mainly as a dancer, from what I understood) for quite some time.

Anyway, just thought I'd give the heads up so inquiring minds can ferret out more information from more concrete and reliable sources.

What sort of reputation does Pepperdine have for music and theatre? Do they have dance? The only thing I know about Pepperdine is that a girl from my D's dance studio got a scholarship there for voice several years ago which totaled $50,000.

They have (very arguably) the best classical guitar program in the nation, but other than that I think that they are more voice-oriented than instrumental. Again, just my perception...

The best MT guy student from our high school is at Pepperdine, so the new MT program will work out well for him. He was able to put together his own program in voice and theater and received significant merit aid. He has also been in several operas. It has been a good fit for him (also talented in academics).

Wow - Pepperdine is 15 minutes from our house - sure would beat 3,000 miles away. Shauna, is it starting this year and is it audition based? It isn't the place for us (academically) however, for any of you interested. it's on a beautiful hillside overlooking Malibu. Big surfer community. I believe it is a Catholic school.

I think it is affiliated with Church of Christ, but it could be one of the many colleges have church relationships that have no real connection other than historical.

Pepperdine does indeed have a beautiful campus and a fairly nice performing arts center. I hadn't heard about a new MT program but the BA in Theatre does require an audition, so I would assume that if there's going to be an MT program, it will also require one. I'd recommend that anyone who might be interested have a look at the theatre curriculum. It is not as extensive as many of the programs that are discussed on this forum, nor does it have the depth of actual acting classes.

dramama, I believe you are correct that it is the Church of Christ. It definitely does have an impact on campus, classes, and the culture of the school, which is not everyone's 'cup of tea', so to speak. If you have a look at their website, it is obvious that that the religious influence aspect of the school is very evident.

Once again, this is only what I heard through another student. However, what I gathered is that it is not really an official program yet. They did do a musical there last year, however, and are trying to do more of the like.

My voice teacher is best friends with the MT/Music director at Pepperdine and she said the program is great. She is having him come out to our school in Missouri in order to do auditions for the MT/Vocal Performance program. She also said that “they give more money than Oprah!”

They do have a well-recognized voice program but I had not yet heard that they are starting an MT program. They have not had much dance in the past Mtmommy, but I suppose that will change if the add MT. It is a very small school and is definitely influenced by their connection with the church. It is a very conservative campus and also fairly isolated. While it is in the Malibu community, there is little public transportation in the area and since it is on the very busy Highway 1, it is really not safe to walk anywhere. The campus is also pretty dead on the weekends, so if you don’t have a car there is not much to do. It is in a beautiful location and is a gorgeous campus, it just would not be for everyone. (My daughter would die there- just to slow for her). As good as their voice program is, hopefully they will develop an equally good MT program. There is a poster on CC that teaches there and also has children who are very active in MT- one is currently in an east coast program. Hopefully she will see this thread and post what she knows.
