Percent of SAT?

Hello everyone. I was wondering How largely colleges look at SAT/ACT scores in the admissions process. I know I have great extracurriculars and gpa but my SAT is largely average (2010) and I'm looking for admission into the upper echelon of colleges (Berkeley, UChicago, duke, etc.) thanks

There is no rule or set percentage, but from what I’ve heard, standardized test scores are something like 20-25% of the application (the rest being GPA, EC’s, Essays).
But for the top schools, test scores are probably less, since they place more emphasis on EC’s and other things that make applicants stand out.

^I agree with above. SAT’s are useful for getting scholarships at State schools.

28.2% 10char

But would a college simply refuse to look at my resume and reject me simply because of my SAT score or would they read the rest of my application?

Colleges get so many applications (tens of thousands) that i makes sense to use the sat more as a “cutoff” for potential acceptancees, That being said, if you have an SAT of say, 1450, then you will have a CHANCE of being accepted at a college, say Cornell. If you have an SAT of say, 1320, then you really have NO chance, unless you’re a superstar athlete.

The college would still read the rest of your application, as that is the policy of pretty much all top tier schools, but a mediocre SAT score will make it very unlikely for you to get an acceptance letter UNLESS you have a hook.

Bottomline: SAT’s won’t get you into top schools, but they will put you in the ballpark for the school and make the adcoms seriously consider you.

My dad’s a guidance counselor and is friends with many admissions officers. This is, he says, how the SAT/ACT factors in the application process.

2010 isn’t a terrible SAT score. A score like that probably falls in the bottom range of those schools SAT score range, so you can still have a shot at getting accepted, however a 2200+ SAT score will standout. Most colleges use a point scale for the various parts of an application (Academics, Extracurriculars, essay, etc). A low SAT score will most likely give you low points in academics/test scores unless you have a great GPA and an extremely rigorous schedule.

WOW, thanks cortana thats really helpful. Really appreciate it.
