Percentage to 4.0 Scale GPA?

Hi everyone,

So my school gives us percentages and at the end of the year, also spits out our GPA on the 4.0 scale, without ever really explaining how that works. I was told mine cumulatively from 9-11 is a 3.78 unweighted. This really confused me because I was told anything 93+ is a 4.0, and when I calculated, I got a 3.94. I did this by converting every grade separately to the 4.0 scale and then dividing at then end. So I did some googling and found another way to convert is to take the percentage, divide by 20, and subtract 1. Given that my percentage unweighted is a 95.7, that equaled around a 3.78 using that formula.

My question is, which way do colleges look at GPA? Because clearly, a 3.94 looks way better than a 3.78. I’ve heard that colleges recalculate during admissions anyway. so that’s why I’m asking. Also, do colleges see percentages or letter grades for each class? What if my school considers a 93 an A-, not an A?

If anyone has any idea, I’d really appreciate it.

Huh? There’s no way a 95.7 is a 3.78. I’m pretty sure colleges use the first method that spat out a 3.94.

Thanks for the reply! I thought that sounded a little low too, but I wasn’t sure. Hopefully that’s what colleges do haha

You can’t directly convert a GPA on a 100-point scale to a GPA on a 4.0 scale because it’s possible to get different results depending on what your individual course grades are.

The above post is correct. What I would do is go to your guidance counselor (schedule a meeting - this isn’t too urgent as of now), and ask her to explain how the grading process works. I’m sure if you ask the right way s/he will be more than happy to help you.
