So, I am a junior and I recently got a 36 on the act, first sitting. People are telling me that I need to apply to the ivies and to stanford and all that and I'm very flattered BUT...

My gpa is around a 4.65 uw out of 5. (5.3 weighted).
I am in the top 7 %
I can expect these to go up a bit because I'm pretty certain I will be getting straight a's this semester.

I'm not quite sure where this puts me as far as colleges go. I'm a girl and I want to go into engineering, I THINK but am not sure of this.

As far as extracurriculars go, I am drum major of the marching band, in nhs, on the band board, 400 hours volunteering, blah blah blah.

I'm just confused and I feel like I need some advice as to where to apply, where I can get in, etc.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!!

Your college list should look like this: HYPS

Congratz on the 36!

Pick a few reach a few match and a few safety schools. Don’t just write down HYPS and be done with it just because you got a 36. It guarantees nothing.

A question, how much time did you put to studying (if you did) for that perfect score in the first sitting? It’s pretty amazing, I’ll say that.

Pick a few safety schools; several are willing to give full rides based on extremely high test scores. Matches are very important, and low reaches are as well. The high reaches (such as the ones you mentioned) are worth some apps if you like them, and you stand a chance.

You need to assemble a list of schools that follow what metrical suggests. You should have at least a couple of safeties you are sure to get into and are willing to go to if nothing else works out, and then assemble the rest. Ivies are a crapshoot and so assuming you will get in because of a 36 ACT is not accurate.

i thnk u just want to brag but that’s my opinion. anyone knows u can go pretty much basically anywhere u want…perfect ACT…GPA…EC’S…etc.

@illinifan I am certainly not on here to brag and I hope it didn’t come off that way. Besides if I wanted to brag I would do it in better places than a cc forum lololol I guess I should have elaborated: I’m confused because my test score fits some criteria while my gpa may be alittle too low

@dukedom I think it was more of just skills collected over time…the act is hugely focused on reading/interpretation skills and since I’ve always read for fun since I was a little kid I guess that’s what helped me the most

Thank you to everyone for the advice!

I would be looking at the to 30 schools and start touring! With those kinds of stats, I would say that you have a good shot at any of those schools. Go for fit not for rank! You would definitely be a contender for HYPS.

Good luck!

Congrats on the ACT! As other people have mentioned, you can get into almost anywhere but don’t count on any ivy league college for sure just because of your ACT. A kid at my school with a 36 ACT last year got rejected from Harvard…it happens.

HYPSM would probably be not very likely because your GPA and ECs aren’t up to par with that level.

High reaches could be Penn SEAS and maybe Caltech.

For reaches, try Cornell, Columbia, Notre Dame, Barnard.

Wellesley for a high match.

Matches could be RPI, Elon, Wesleyan (don’t know if they have anything engineering-like).

Low matches could be Rutgers, Penn State, Binghamton, Stonybrook

Safeties could be UAlbany, Syracuse, Northeastern. (don’t know about engineering opportunities at these places though…)
