perfect ACT

Hi I have a pretty crappy gpa only a 3.3. something like a Uof M 3.4
Although I do have a 36 on my ACT. will the act balance out the gpa or do I still have a small chance.

LOL, how the hell did you end up with a 3.4 and a 36?

It's really hard to tell, because Umich is all about their recalculated GPA for some reason. They think it's actually a measure of intelligence. (LOL)

I'd say maybe 60% chance. You probably would have to have an excuse for such a low GPA, though.

You never know, a 36 is freakin' amazing, and they might do anything to get you.

Apply and see what happens. I say it's worth a try.

I am inteligent...took 6 APs and got 5s on all of them, and got a 36 ACT, but, I was kind of lazy in high school, lazy not stupid. Also my mom got lung cancer and my grades dropped because I wanted to spend time with her and help her out. Oddly enough my best grades were when we were going through the brunt of it. Also I dont go to an easy school either. 85% of the students get a 3.4 to a 4.0. I would say that roughly 30% get a 3.9 to a 4.0.

Ok, well here is my immoral, but necessary advice:

DO NOT mention that your best grades were when she had cancer. You MUST describe the issue in DETAIL in your "academic explanation" section. I'm sorry that it might feel like capitalizing on your mom, which I really would not want you to do, but think about what she wants for you -- to get into Umich.

As long as you do that, I guarantee admission. 100%.

yeah, kind of underhanded but you could write that your mother's condition instilled in you a drive to excel or something like that. It might "prick" the hearts of the admissions office enough to admit you regardless of the other variables.

if most of your school has a 3.5 or higher gpa then your school has rampant grade inflation......

I am most definitely not diagreeing with you
grade inflation yuck, my school runs rampant with it.

could describe how a ton of grade inflation will affect me or any individual?

well a 3.3 will look even worse because if everyone has high gpas, your gpa will look below average compared to your classmates..

If you have six 5s on AP exams and a 36 ACT composite, your chances are very good, even with a 3.4 GPA. Contrary to what many seem to think, Michigan doesn't only look at GPA. They look at the total package. A 3.4 GPA with a 31 or 32 ACT score won't cut it, but a boatload of 5s on the APs and a 36 on the AP will make up for a lower GPA.

true, they dont "only" look at gpas, but your ap/act scores might not completely cover up gpa... well, they probably will (haha) but take the time to explain your mom's situation. you said it yourself-- intelligent but kind of lazy. they will probably realize the lazy part when they see that you have such a discrepancy between your test scores and gpa, and that can't be any good.. :x

i'm almost positive you'll get in.
