Perfect SAT/ACT/PSAT + Average GPA = ?

hi all,
i have taken the sat (2 tries)/act (1 try) /psat (1 try) and gotten 2400/36/240, however, my gpa is only average - currently at a 3.50, my weighted is 4.05. my class rank is top 25%(unw), top 10% weighted, and i currently attend a public high school.

but i attended a top magnet school in the country my sophomore year, and this killed my gpa (2.9 that year). my freshman year i got a 3.8, my junior a 3.8.

however, i have shown a positive trend since leaving the magnet school at the beginning of my junior year. i achieved straight As in my most recent semester. my ECs are decent(varsity track this year, lots of top 10 state-level finishes in academic competitions, but not much else - not even membership in other things), but my volunteer/work is kinda weak (volunteer: 20 + 150 foreign (i dont kno how i can get colleges to even believe that - the place i worked at didnt even speak english), work: 50 (foreign again v.v))

I have taken 5 APs and qualify as an AP Scholar w/ distinction - calc bc, english, bio, u.s. gov, stats (all this year) 5/4/5/4/5

I took 2 SATIIs this year - bio 790, lit 770, and 1 my fresh year - math lvl2 800.

i'm currently doing a summer mentorship at a college nearby in mathematical computer science, and self-studying for some java certification exams.

my class rigor so far has been as many honors as my schedule would allow, i.e. the most challenging courseload. my class rigor next year doesn't seem very impressive, but this is due to the fact that my school is running out of challenging courses - i still plan on self-studyign and taking another 2 SATIIs and 5 APs before i'm off to college. (e.g. physics/chemistry/german)

Having said all that, I have two questions: 1) How do i explain my soph year to colleges (i dont wanna come off as a slacker) and 2) what are my chances (i wanna major in comp sci, comp eng, or math - possibliy double major) at

carnegie mellon
columbia
cooper union
cornell
harvey mudd

rose-hulman
stevens institute of tech
texas a&m
university illinois @ champaign

Your last thread and this thread are pretty different... Never knew test scores/gpa/EC's could change without you having to do anything to them!

I didnt get my ap scores back until 2 weeks ago, satIIs not until 3 weeks ago, sat/act until 5 weeks ago, my ECs are the same...

bump.
now that i got all that settled, anybody wanna chance me?

A perfect sat/act score are really prestigious to some of the private/public schools. Off the top of my head, UC Berkeley, Vanderbilt, Duke, and I think Notre Dame. My sat score was really low ~1800 do you have any tips you could share? Good Luck and Congrats on the score.

Plz chance me in return!

Hi Masterodisaster! I'll chance you ... but can you chance me too? <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/538677-please-chance-me-i-d-really-really-appreciate.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/538677-please-chance-me-i-d-really-really-appreciate.html</a>.

Your GPA of 3.5 is on the low side, and leaving a magnet school that obviously offers a higher quality education program than a regular high school isn't the most impressive thing on earth. Otherwise, your (+) grade trend MAY help, but what will help even more is that you've obviously challenged yourself in HS with 5 APs already. Achieving a perfect SAT and ACT a very rare feat to accomplish, but do take in mind that top schools aren't so drawn in by perfect standardized scores that much any more. I know a kid in my school who also had that, but he was dinged (rejected) from HYSP. Your SAT Subjects are highly impressive, but do note that lots of people get 800s on the Math Level 2. Your ECs and honors are pretty good, but they're not overly impressive, because you seem to lack leadership qualities.

Overall, I'm not too sure about how college admissions will play out for you (chancing you was very hard), because I can't really see how a kid can ace BOTH the ACT and SAT and not do so well in school. This only shows to schools that you practiced to become skilled at knowing about how to take the SAT and ACT. Sorry ... I think I sound a little harsh right now, but I've spent the last 2 hours chancing people who haven't been chanced, so I'm slightly tired and bored ...

Chances:
Carnegie Mellon: Match
Columbia: Reach (GPA)
Cooper Union: Reach (you don't truly demonstrate a talent in math/sci w/o nat'l honors in those fields)
Cornell: Match (GPA)
Harvey Mudd: Not familiar to chance you
MIT: Reach
Rose/Stevens: Not familiar
Texas A&M: In but no scholarship $ b/c of GPA
Illinois: Safety match ... maybe

Good luck, and remember to chance me!

that perfect SAT would probably raise your chances by a lot. other than cornell and columbia, i'd say you're a match for pretty much all of them.
