Perfect Small Student Gift?

Tool kit and in pink…my d had one. Some boys on her floor went look for a philips head screw driver and my d handed them her pink one. They scoffed, but she said well, at least I have a screwdriver…it was actually a very good social tool

Brookstone sells those little flashlights that are on carabiners that can be hooked to backpacks. I’ve also seen those water bottles that lay flat (I don’t recall the name) - those might be a bit more expensive, but those are a thought as well.

I gave D’s friends a travel hanging jewelry holder…it is a special hanger that has clear plastic zipped pockets to hold jewelry - got them at Home Goods for $10…every kid wrote to me and said it was the most helpful gift…we are giving them to new grads this year also…

I buy towels at home goods or marshalls and have their names embroidered on them.

These are all fantastic ideas, thanks!! When she had a party around New Year’s and I needed a screwdriver, there was one boy who kept a kit in his car-- should have remembered how handy that was!!

downtoearth, I love the embroidered towels idea. I have been thinking and thinking about replacing my sewing machine with a Brother sewing and embroidery machine…

I just bought a bunch of these earring in various schools for my daughter’s friends. They’re real cute!

pack of condoms

D received a cute Vera Bradley umbrella. After the grad party, promptly said “what am I going to do with this? I never use an umbrella.” One year later, reported she used it more than any other gift she received. That cute umbrella turned out to be really needed when walking from one end of campus to the other in pouring rain.

I like popup hampers like this one. Sturdier than most, with a shoulder strap handy on the stairs.

Some students use thermal coffee cups/thermos that they can put into backpacks/messenger bags. My son uses his regularly.

I like the tool kit idea but of course DS and DH think it’s silly. That said, how big a kit am I looking for? I have found 101 piece kits and larger. Is it something like this?

[101-Pieces Homeowner’s Set-HDX101HOS at The Home Depot](http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-203227266/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=101+piece+tool+kit&storeId=10051)

or is that overkill?

That is a great toolkit! Maybe overkill, this one is super cute even if a little more money and it is definitely for girls!

Great ideas, BTW!

These are great suggestions. I’m thinking of printing out this thread as a shopping list! My daughter needs all of these things!

I really like that toolkit but I don’t think the guys I’m buying for will feel the same. I think it is the perfect size and wish I could find it in any color but pink.

I guess this is the male counterpart:

MichMom, I think it would be a hoot to give guys the pink one (I have an S graduating this year, too). Total waste of money for a joke but you could just order one as a gag and keep it for yourself. The second one you linked to looks very useful, but the first one from Home Depot is cheaper and has more tools (very manly), so I’d probably go with that one.

LOL! Funny but would they ever talk to him again? :)

Pink is for girls so the guys quit stealing the tools!

Small bowls like these are always handy. You can fill them before giving them as gifts (maybe 2 or 4 bowls per person?). Fill with M&M’s, paper clips/thumbtacks, quarters, herbal teabags…

They’re great as a catch-all on a student’s desk or dresser if they don’t have a kitchen.

Just went to one of D’s friend’s open house. Used the umbrella idea—we got her a custom prepaid debit card with a cheetah background, D got her a cheetah umbrella. Perfect for the friend who will be at a big U and walking a bit.
