Performance major and a marching band?

My son is a HS senior and just had his first audition for a music therapy major. He plays Tuba. We were told that while he was OK there were two who had already auditioned that were stronger and they were only looking for one tuba spot. My son also is a first year student on the String Bass, and for kicks plays the trumpet and the bass guitar. He is not first chair, and probably isn’t the worst out there. He has struggled with sight reading and pitch matching. He is not looking to be a performer although he has enjoyed all four years as tuba in marching band. He truly is hooked on music therapy and has volunteered at a local center working with someone in therapy, so he does understand the major. He is academically sound, looking around Pittsburgh PA. Any suggestions who may be looking for a tuba player who is serious, but maybe not the best for a therapy major?
