I thought I just did.

And I am the Queen of England!!

Glad to have you on board, your majesty. I have at various times been a Pasha, a Wazir, several Lords, the Emperor of Japan and even a deity or two.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the stakes have gone from improbable to ridiculous to ludicrous to unimaginable. I think the next claim will have to involve someplace either fictional or extraterrestrial.

Long live The Queen!

In my past lives the highest rank I’ve ever attained was a Colonel in the Zaporozhian Cossacks. For years, I did have my daughter convinced that I was a Vulcan, as I could do the Vulcan greeting with either hand; son was an unbeliever, as I could not perform the debilatating nerve pinch.

I’ve also been mistaken for Mel Gibson, which usually results in an upgrade to a first class seat.

Oh heavens…I hope I don’t LOOK like the current Queen of England!! Not wishing to offend anyone…but that wouldn’t even make getting a first class seat worthwhile.

Just for the record, I am directly descended from King John of England (1166 - 1216). I am also a direct descendant of the last king of Wales, Llewelyn ap Gruffydd (1223-1282). However, I don’t expect you to treat me any differently than you would treat the queen…

Not bad, violadad, Fictional and Extraterrestrial in one fell swoop. I am most often mistaken for Rubeus Hagrid, which makes a first class seat almost a necessity.

I would definitely check out West Chester University! Their music department is tops, and their marching band rocks my world. A senior in high school and am in marching band as well, we always look forward to seeing their band. West Chester is maybe 3 hours away from you.

They also offer a lot of other majors and are especially known for their education department. Because it is a state school, it is less expensive. For out of state, it is about $15,000 a year (not counting the extra expenses).
Here’s their website: [West Chester University of Pennsylvania](http://www.wcupa.edu)

Their marching band is also on YouTube if you want to listen :)

Having been the drum major of the “Marching Billygoats,” as you call them, I met my husband in the band, and it has not seem to hurt his career as a professor of music composition. It’s still early in his career, but he’s not an outcast, his pieces get played, and he landed a tenure-track position five resumes into the hunt. He doesn’t flaunt the fact that he was in the MOB, it’s not on his CV, but his being married to a former DM is not cause for exclusion from the Serious Musicians Club.

There were several kids from the Shepherd School who were in the MOB. Some of Leone Buyse’s own flute players would join us for games as their schedules allowed. It was mainly a time commitment issue, so that is something that the OP’s son will want to consider. Whether marching bands, or even, horror of horrors, scatter bands, cause leprosy is not.

To join in on the real topic at hand, I am actually the Duchess of Kent.

for what it is worth, my son’s 4 years spent in the hs marching band represented his formative hs experience and growth on many levels.

I have seen the U Mass at Amherst Band Play and they were fabulous!

I am either Baron of Graymatter or Sir Loin of Beef, depending on which line you trace.

As a former member of the notorious Trojan Marching Band, I can attest that there were many performance majors in the band. Why? Because the TMB gave out scholarships. The School of Music learned it helped in recruiting. All the performance majors were brass, percussion or jazz as the classical woodwind profs did not allow their students to join. There were also a bunch of composition majors because performing in the marching band counted in the ensemble requirements.

So, I would also recommend checking with the marching bands to see if they offer scholarships.

That’s an interesting point. A lot of composition majors face this requirement, and they can have problems if their instrumental skills are not up to the standards of other ensembles.

My son is a HS senior and just had his first audition for a music therapy major. He plays Tuba. We were told that while he was OK there were two who had already auditioned that were stronger and they were only looking for one tuba spot. My son also is a first year student on the String Bass, and for kicks plays the trumpet and the bass guitar. He is not first chair, and probably isn’t the worst out there. He has struggled with sight reading and pitch matching. He is not looking to be a performer although he has enjoyed all four years as tuba in marching band. He truly is hooked on music therapy and has volunteered at a local center working with someone in therapy, so he does understand the major. He is academically sound, looking around Pittsburgh PA. Any suggestions who may be looking for a tuba player who is serious, but maybe not the best for a therapy major?

bandmom2, you may want to start a new thread, since this one may only be read by folks interested in the marching band question.

Thanks, He is very interested in marching band, but not so much performance, so I guess he is the odd man out
I will start a new thread…Thanks

Does Duquesne still have a music therapy program?

A number of Pittsburgh area high school students attend Ohio University in Athens, OH. Ohio has a music therapy program that is one of the oldest in the country and its marching band is known as the “Most Exciting Band in the Land”.
Thanks for all the great tips, it looks like we have some work cut out for us! Thanks…One question…what are the levels (one school said son had to be at least a level three) can anyone explain?
Thanks
