I am a transfer student in so cal and living through the bio major. I got into a the main schools i was aiming for (csuf and csulb). unexpectedly, i got into ucla as well but as a communications major (bio prereqs were different etc). now im stuck between the decision of attending ucla or the calstates i was shooting for. they are totally different majors so i guess im just curious what would be beneficial in the long run. thanks(:

Well… What kind of career and/or grad school do you want?

i think it depends, you can change your major from communication as long as its within the college. it also just depends on the environment you want. i had a similar situation, i live w my bf and our cats in la (i was raised here) and i was gonna go to a csu, but got into a uc. these are things i factored in…

-class sizes… student to teacher ratio
- financial aid… personally i was really stressed bummed that the CSU was gonna be so expensive for being off campus, compared to the UC package i got for on campus. plus the ucs have the blue and gold program if you qualify. and the csu didnt cover my full need, i had to take 11k in loans and still pay 4k out of pocket. compared to uc where i got full grants for the entire 32k.
-look at the class schedules to see what courses sound more interesting, dont look at the catalogue as seriously cus even though courses are listed they are not always being offered esp w budget cuts. - uc is more research based, so there is more competition. csu are more teaching based and you will probably be able to know your professors better. but these are all things ive read from research and word of mouth.

my dilemma was although the csu would be easier, as in living at home, and the major i had communication disorders only really had one pathway which was to and end up doing speech pathology which is a good job and has a great hiring outlook. whereas as the uc my major was linguistics, and with that i could go a couple different routes, personally ive always wanted to end up in academia, teaching higher education, or administrating something with people w disabilities. anyways i felt like id regret not choosing the uc because i was ‘scared’ of leaving my family and bf and being on my own. but i also thought if i am gonna to take out loans its my responsibility to make the wisest financial choices, and financially the uc was the better choice even though i have to move and live on campus and leave my job as a TA with LAUSD. also visit the campus youd be surprised how your gut or intuition makes you feel…

congrats on getting in! good luck!

I was always fixed towards the hospital hoping to find out what I wanted to eventually do as I volunteered and stuff, but I’m still not sure exactly. I was kind of interested in maybe a masters in public health though.

@kyokoloco thanks! yeah i would definitely live at home for csus. however, its half the price of a uc for me. I am leaning towards ucla as i feel i will have a better life experience short term and long term. i also love competition oddly enough hahha.

ya plus in all honesty we are raised to hear and think as ucla being an amazing school, subconsciously its kinda hard to pass up a better ranking school, and dang who doesn’t want to be proud of themselves and who cares if you get validation knowing its one of the top schools in the entire world. ucs also have really great alumni networks, and more outside funding.and in all honesty the csu system is doing worse financially right now.
