Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (PI)

All right, so, has anyone ever heard of this institution? It's based in Canada, but it runs a two-week summer program that is open to Canadians, U.S. citizens, and other countries. It looks pretty interesting, and here is an excerpt about the program:

ISSYP
The International Summer School for Young Physicists (ISSYP) is an exciting and challenging two-week program for grade 11 high school students. The program explores the most fascinating ideas theoretical physics has to offer — from the weird quantum world of atoms and subatomic particles to black holes, warped spacetime, and the expanding universe.
Besides learning incredibly cool stuff, students get chance to work with leading international theoretical physicists in mentoring sessions while creatively exploring their own interests and ideas.

So tell me this isn't one of the most interesting things out there, assuming that it is as rigorous as they say it is and that you're like theoretical physics.

Once again, has anyone heard of this program? Has anyone attended it before? Is it worth looking into more? How do out-of-country programs like this factor into college admissions? Do you think universities have heard of the program? I guess I should research more about the institute's prestige to get a better idea. Still, it sounds SOOOOO cool!

who cares what colleges think, if it sounds awesome to you (it sounds really cool to me too) , then go for it.

The problem is I don't know if it's worth it. I mean only two weeks versus one that is nationally acclaimed for 4 to 6 weeks. I don't know, but I have two years to figure it out.

You worry too much. Your priorities might change in two years. It has for me.

please don't care about what colleges think, do what you like. I have never heard of this but I will be looking into this further and possiably consider applying because this is something that interests me.

cheers

smartafgkid,

tell me if you find anything else about this program outside of it's main website. i really am considering this for the future.

I've heard of it. This one famous guy who got into an argument with this other famous guy went there.

I applied last year and I didn't get in. It sounded really cool! It takes many more Canadian students than U.S. students. Maybe I was the only one rejected (i'm not amazingly smart, I'm just really into physics, thought it was worth a try), but it must be kind of prestigious, since not everyone that applies gets in, lol. Good luck!

I am going to apply this year! From what I have heard, you will most likely get in if you have a true passion for theoretical physics-- its not about how much you know in theoretical physics( in fact most laws do break down at string theory), it's about the questions you ask....the assumptions you counter...you should be able to exhibit such mentality/curious mindset....take them through your thought processes from the journeys you have had with theoretical physics. Just be a good writer and exhibit your thoughts onto your paper.
Good luck and hopefully we will meet at ISSYP!
