Perks of FSU over UF

So I'll be applying to the two major universities later this year as a transfer student. I'm going to be going to school for philosophy and possibly a minor in political science. I know FSU has a great philosophy program as well as political science department.

I've only been to Tally once, never visted UF. I'm completely unaware of the atmosphere both universities foster. I know UF is renounced as a better school, but FSU's programs in what I wish to study seem more intriguing. Is there anything I should be looking for when deciding or any help from experience anyone can tell me in deciding between the two because I'm drawing a blank.

I've visited both campuses and personally like FSU a lot better-there seems like a lot more to do in town, UF is pretty much in a swamp with a few stores here and there lol.
Overall, I think you need to decide which one fits you best, regardless of its rep. For example, my friend last year got into both UF and FSU and unlike most if not all of the kids who got into both, choose FSU. She felt it was more community oriented.

I don't know if you like football but all students can get tickets to any FSU games but at UF, you have to win a lottery which is nearly impossible...

Now, to stop bashing UF-both my parents attended UF for both undergrad and grad school. It is what you make of it. The UF campus itself is very pretty though so I'd recommend a visit before you decide. I hope that helps, just slightly.

I agree, UF has the better rep but isn't necessarily the best choice for everyone. I'm leaning towards FSU - I want to be a criminal prosecutor and also study creative writing, and FSU seems to have better programs in those areas.

FSU now has a lottery as well, but we get football tickets for free. Plus, this past season they didn't even need to use the lottery one time.

Just to add to this thread...Sometimes the program is better at one school vs. the other even if the overall rating of the school differs. For Musical Theatre FSU has a much more established and reputable program than UF.

Just adding my 10 cents about program rank vs. univ rank.

I was one of those people who was confused between UF and FSU (went to HS in Atlanta so did not know much, besides football, about either) I visited both school's new student orientation and at the last minute decided to attend FSU. One of the reasons was because my program at FSU (MIS) was ranked in the top 20 and it was unranked at UF. The other reasons were the larger urban environment in Tallahassee and I loved the fact that everything was walking distance on FSU's campus.

Best decision I have ever made, I think program rank matters alot more than people think. Program rank tells you that you will get some of the best professors in YOUR major. Also some great alumni networks, and atleast in my major's case a large amount of employers

(Just to let you know I am a current Senior at FSU)

Thanks for your post, dfan. Great information.

Some hopeful applicants may want to know what MIS is though...

I assumed Management Information Systems was MIS.

Some in high school may not know MIS is a major in the College of Business. ;)

College of Business | MIS Department

Oh yeah for more information about the major it was ranked in the top 15 in the nation last year and for anyone interest in salary ;) , MIS majors received the highest average starting salaries in the College of Business followed by Accounting.
