Perks of the Regents scholarship?

I was accepted into Davis for biomedical engineering and I got the Regents scholarship. I wasn’t really thinking about Davis before now but now I am considering it because of Regents. I am wondering whether the scholarship would be worth it to go there instead of some of the “higher” UCs. Also, I want to apply to med school and I’m not sure whether it’d be better to go to Davis where I could probably get a higher GPA than somewhere like Berkeley, which is considered more prestigious.

Another Regent scholar at UCD ( chem engineering). I am pretty sure I will pass UCD for a higher ranked UC. I applied to UCB as a business major though.

If you’re planning on applying to med school, definitely go to the college where you can get a higher GPA. In addition to the monetary benefit, Regents also gives you priority registration - super important for getting the classes you want/need, hopefully with the best professors! And it looks good on your app if you’re a Regents Scholar.
Also, unlike Berkeley, Davis has a medical school so there are probably more opportunities for medical research/internships.

I got Regents at Davis and a few other UCs but not LA or Berkeley, and I’m 99% sure I’m going to go to San Diego w/ Regents. Forget US News rankings, I’d rather have priority reg, better grades, and some kind of a social life.

If you’re planning to go to med school, definitely DO NOT go to Berkeley. You need to go to a place where you can maintain a high GPA while acquiring numerous internships, etc. Berkeley for pre-med stuff is a plain wreck. GPA-killer.

^archiac hits the mark. Berkeley lacks a medical school while most other UC campuses do. I also got Regents at Davis and Berkeley, but I’m passing both for UCLA (hopefully I get admitted).

Is UCLA good for pre-med? I’ve heard that it is but I’ve also heard that it’s similar to Berkeley, so I’m a little confused. And would it be possible to maintain a good GPA there?
My only drawback for Davis is the location; I’ve always wanted to have a city feel rather than the rural feel that Davis has. But obviously location isn’t my main priority.

This last year D got admissions at Cal, UCLA, UCSD and UCD. Only UCD offered her Regents Scholarship. She plans on going to Med school as well.

She chose UCD because of the Regents. Remember, having Priority Registration is a huge thing if you plan on Med School. A year of Math, Chem, Bio, OChem, and Physics to all be completed in the first two years is lot more easier with Priority Reg. Think about that!!

^^^cahsparent, thanks for the tip. i suppose Regents is not very useful for business major since UCD is not a target school for IB recruiting but the higher ranked UCs are. (UCB/UCLA)

My son is an IB at a top notch bank and UCLA and Berkeley are heavily recruited UC’s. So, if that is what you are after Davis probably wouldn’t be the best career choice. Good luck.

@myboy123 If D was thinking Business major, we would have steered her to Cal. I agree with lastkid2go that Davis is probably not a best career choice (at least right now) for Business majors.

Interested in Stats from those of you who did receive the Regents from Davis. My son did not and I really expected him to get it there based on previous information I had.
