As an immigrant from a country rarely represented in the student body (I couldn't find it in any school that publishes demographics) would my status be considered a hook, or have any positive influence on my chances? I'm not a URM unfortunately.

A “hook” is something that schools will look long and hard for, will court those applicants and really try to win them over. Your status is not uncommon and therefore not a “hook”. It’s part of who you are so you can make a case for yourself in the personal statement – but no file reader is going to look at you and say:“Voila! Finally we have an applicant from country X! Auto admit!”
