Permutation and Combination VS Counting

Hey, can anybody explain the differences between Permutation and Combination VS Counting (i.e. if something happens x times and something happens y times, when set together, these two can happen x * y times)? I seem to get them confused.

Note: I already know the difference between permutation and combination. It is when it is set with counting, I have a hard time explaining the differences. Thanks!
