Perpetuating premed myths

No one requires you to take 44X. If you have research experience, don't subject yourself to it. Upperclassmen, please don't instigate the myth that they "MUST" take Bio 44X. There are so many ways around it. You can fulfill your bio labs in so many ways and still have it count for medical school. If you want to know, message me. I don't feel like arguing.

Please contact a premed advisor to see if your bench research or something else can be acceptable for the med school requirement. I have heard of this happening in the past, but only via word of mouth. And, if you're a bio major, I hear that only one but not both of the bio labs can be replaced by research. Since med schools as well as Stanford tell you that you need a year of biology lab, please check with the bio department's Student Services and/or a premed advsior before assuming this is true and making this decision.

Yes, I've talked to Patricia and that is why I'm telling these kids now. Unlike others, I don't make assumption. You could even use Surgery 101 Regional Study of Human Anatomy. But I'm sure you already know that.

"And, if you're a bio major, I hear that only one but not both of the bio labs can be replaced by research."
Yes, and you can do Bio 44Y, which is infinitely better than X because you get to design your own project. OR, you could do the 54/55 sequence, which isn't offer this year.

Point being, don't go around, saying "You must take 44X."

Fair enough. I've been through both 44X and 44Y, and I will actually be teaching 44X this coming quarter. I would not necessarily recommend taking 44Y without 44X because much of the logistics (doing the experiments as well as the assignments) are the same, and we don't take a lot of time in 44Y to review. However, it is definitely possible. I would strongly recommend doing 44X, if you're just going to do one, because there is a lot of focus on how to do scientific writing, how to critically read journal articles, and general familiarity with lab techniques such as doing gel electrophoresis. If a student feels that his or her research experience renders this class experience unnecessary, then cool. Just my 2 cents.

If anyone has more questions on bio labs 44X and 44Y, please feel free to ask me.

By the way, I believe that Bio 44X + Surgery 101 is acceptable for premed, but I have not heard of doing 44Y + Surg 101. When I said to "please contact a premed advisor", I wasn't referring to you, staticsoliloquy; I did not doubt that you have a good source. I meant that other premeds should discuss their plans with an advisor just to make sure everything looks good, especially if they want to do something that isn't widely known (such as not doing 44X). Different people have different circumstances, so while I think it's great that you've brought up this alternative, I don't think people should just automatically not take 44X without discussing it with an advisor. I have visted Patricia often, and she's always been helpful when I have questions about planning.

Surgery 101 is generally taken in lieu of 44Y, I think, like Cel said. I've also heard of the bio dept allowing research in the summer to count for both labs, as long as your mentor/PI signs off on a agreement that says that the work you'll be doing in the lab will be an equivalent of 44X&Y.
