So, because Tulane.. for some reason.. doesn't accept college essays, I've had to edit mine down A LOT (it was originally around 900 words.) I got it down to 637. The instructions say between 250 and 500 words, though there is no character limit. Would it be terrible if I got my essay down to, say, between 500 and 580 words and handed it in that way? Or should I just (somehow, God knows how I'm going to do this) get it down to 500 words?

There are differing opinions on this (there was another thread with a similar question), but I would say that if Tulane is really important to you, i.e. it is one of the schools you are most considering attending, then I would get your essay down in size. Why take a chance? However, if the odds of you attending Tulane even if you get in are somewhat small, then I would say don’t worry about it.

Have you tried having someone else look at it and cut things for you? Sometimes that is the best way, you are probably too close to it to see where to cut.

The reason Tulane does this, I think, is that they got 44,000 apps last year, the most of any private school. Can you imagine trying to read that many longer essays with a staff their size? Not fun.

they didn’t cut off mine at the 500 word mark…and honestly I feel as though if I had cut down anymore it would have sucked. I’d imagine that most people are using their commonapp essays…

S could not cut his essay down to less than about 550 words; it would have lost coherence. It did not get cut off, but you should do a print preview to double check.
