Personal App Questions

Ah, finally that time of year - application season. Joy.

Does anyone know if there's a specific date or time period in which Tulane sends out personal apps? I wanted to apply Early Action, but applying via the personal app just seems so much easier. But I don't even know if I'll get one, since it seems to be a mystery as to who Tulane sends them out to. Anyway, I didn't want to jeopardize applying Early Action by waiting until November or December for a personal app that may or may not come.

Do people actually get rejected when applying with the personal app? I always thought a personal app indicated a preference to an applicant, so it would seem odd to get a rejection. But then, I've also heard that Tulane sends personal apps to thousands of students.

As best I understand it, they send the apps in early September. I would say if you don’t have anything by Sept 20, just apply using the online app and mark it EA. Probably there will be some news on here too, with students/parents announcing they got theirs. That will be a clue.

Rejections do happen, but you are right that they select the personal app people based on test scores and other indications (?) of high performance. So I am sure rejections are fairly rare from that group, although if someone had high test scores but a 2.7 GPA, they probably wouldn’t get in unless that GPA still ranked them in the top 10% of the class! The biggest question for most of those students is probably how much merit money and did they get invited to the Honors Program.

Okay, great. Thanks fallenchemist! I suppose this means I’ll just start on an EA application now and have it on standby. Or rather, I’ll start whenTulane puts up its online application.

I’ve received a personal application for Tulane and I have a couple of questions. First, there didn’t seem to be an option for “personal application” where you had to mark which group you were applying in. I marked “early action” instead. When I submit the application, should I call to clarify that I applied via personal app?

Also, if I submit the application within the next week or two, what are the chances that I will hear back by the end of October?

They know who applied via a personal app, it isn’t really a category like SCEA, EA and RD. EA is the right choice. You don’t need to say anything else.

If you get everything to them that quickly, your chances of hearing by then are excellent. I saw your stats on one of your other posts, and I would be shocked if you don’t get offered the Presidential Merit Scholarship ($25,000 last year), Honors Program invite, and you have a shot at the Deans Honor Scholorship. The first two will come with your acceptance, the last is an additional application due by December 15. Your SAT is a little under the guidelines for applying, but your perfect GPA and high class rank might help offset that. In any case, if you visit Tulane and decide it is a place you would seriously consider, I would go for it.

Looking at your list of things that you desire in a school, I have to say Tulane looks like a great fit. The only thing it doesn’t match is the East Coast “requirement”, but a lot of kids that thought that was what they wanted visited New Orleans and the campus and that was that. Many of them are now very happy Tulane students.

All personal applications should have gone out by now from the admissions office. It’s definitely a benefit to use it because it saves you time on filling in personal information youve already provided to the school.

The personal app is the same application as Tulane’s application available online, but is partially filled out for you - if you applied early action then you’re in the same pool of applicants as all other early action applicants (deadline november 15). After last year’s huge number of applications, the admissions office doesn’t guarantee a set time frame for processing and review of early action applications - but they are reviewed on a rolling basis. Definitely a huge benefit to apply earlier. End of october wouldn’t necessarily be a stretch - but you need to make sure all your test scores, recommendations, transcripts, etc. are in, because they don’t start reviewing applications until your file is complete.

So, I received a personal app from Tulane. People say that they select who receives a personal app based on SAT scores and other high achievements. However, I’m pretty confused as to why I received a personal app, seeing as how my stats are way lower than average for Tulane (3.4 gpa/1810 SAT). I thought that maybe they sent it out to just anyone to get more applicants and to look more selective, but after reading what people on CC are saying about the personal app, it sounds pretty legitimate.

So what do you guys think? Do I actually have a chance of getting in because I got a personal app, or is Tulane just using me to increase their number of applicants?

Maybe they have broadened the base, I don’t know. Maybe the database got screwed up this year. Remember, Tulane doesn’t generate this list, outside companies do. However, you certainly would think Tulane is setting the criteria. I know they read these threads from time to time, maybe they will look into it.

Anyway, you have a chance if you have good EC’s and good recs. Your SAT score is such that 20% or so of the students at Tulane have lower scores, and if that GPA is unweighted it isn’t that much lower than a Tulane GPA, which is about 3.6. Admittedly the odds are probably less than 50-50, but if you think you would like Tulane go for it, attend local Tulane presentations, and visit if you can. That helps.

maybe the criteria also include students who have expressed a certain amount of interest.

I didn’t express any interest in Tulane… My ACT was only a 27. Not sure how I got one.

Interesting. I don’t think it was ever really clear on how Tulane chooses Personal Application applicants. I guess the most we can do is just be happy to get one if we do. I would be very interested in knowing the admittance rate for those who applied via personal apps in comparison to those who applied via regular apps though.

I finished filling out my personal application. I’m waiting on my counselor to finish her recommendation. The process is going excruciatingly slowly. Sadly, my application won’t be reviewed until all materials are in and I don’t think my counselor plans on finishing any time soon ):

Bother your high school counselor every day. That’s what I did until they finally finished writing my rec letters. Even wrote a column about how inept they were in my high school newspaper… still surprised my transcripts didnt get “lost in the mail…” The personal application and Tulane’s online application are identical, except the personal application arrives to individuals with some of the basic info (contact, test scores) filled in from information previously submitted to Tulane.
