Thanks Jmmon -- the info is greatly appreciated. The box sounds very interesting. I hope my daughter can come up with something creative if she's given the opportunity to apply. Do I understand correctly that only certain applicants are invited to apply for the DHS program?

I'm still a little confused about "automatic scholarship consideration" as it relates to the Personal Application. Do you think they're referring to the DSA, even though her Personal Ap specifically states, "no essay is required / automatic scholarship consideration?"

I've copied the following text directly from her Personal Ap:

And remember, this application features ...

No required essay.
Automatic scholarship consideration.
No application fee!
An admission decision in just four weeks.

Using this special online application, you are not required to submit an essay. However, all applicants are invited to write a personal statement including any information you would like the admissions committee to take into consideration when we review your application. Either way, make sure you complete the questions below the personal statement segment of this page. (Students applying for the Deans' Honor Scholarship must submit an essay.)

Personal Statement
XXXXX, your personal statement helps us get to know you in ways other than your courses, grades and test scores. It should describe in detail some special interest, significant experience or achievement, or anything else that has special meaning to you or had a significant influence on you. Please use the space below to type or paste your statement.

End of Copy.

Reading it carefully, I can see that "why I want to go to Tulane" commentary is NOT what they're looking for in the Personal Statement. She has worked very hard on one special essay that fits the parameters of the Personal Statement. But, she's afraid if she uses "her best one," she'll be asked to submit another one to apply for the DHS. For most students, coming up with a second essay would probably be no big deal. But, for her -- it's pure torture. (She doesn't have trouble with homework related essays. It's the personal one that kill her. And, we all suffer with her when she's writing them, if you know what I mean! :))

She was so excited to receive the email that said NO ESSAYS, then felt like she'd been double crossed when she got to the above page! I'm off to the website to see if I can figure out what happens after the Personal Ap is submitted. But, if anyone remembers what happens next (specifically with regard to essay requirements for scholarship consideration), we would really appreciate the info. It pretty much boils down to whether to use the "special essay" now, or save it for the next step in the process (if there is a next step in the process).
