How do I address the fact that I missed 28 days of school sophomore year and it effected my grades without sounding like I am making excuses or whining?

Probably not in the essay. Ask your counselor to explain or use additional info.

I was going to address it in the “Additional Information” essay and also discuss some other personal problems, would this be okay or would it just sound like whining

I would be very careful about discussing personal problems. Bottom line–most schools won’t excuse bad grades for any problem so think about what you’re writing and consult your counselor.

hmm alright, it was about missing 28 days of school (sickness resulting in surgery) resulting in low grades sophomore year

Ask your counselor note it in the school report and you should note that in additional info. If everything else is stellar that’s a reasonable excuse for a little weakness.

ya freshmen gpa 4.0 sophomore 3.56 junior 4.0 lol, thank you for the help!

I wouldn’t say something like that in an essay

Nice rebound, you obviously recovered quite well! ;D

carlnator: why do you say that, not trying to challenge you rather to pick up other viewpoints…
I asked my counselor she suggested that if it had a clear impact I should address but the key is HOW i present it, she’s gonna read over it

Just be direct and honest. “My sophomore grades dipped due to a serious illness and surgery that required that I miss 28 days of school that semester. I can address in more detail, if needed.”

ohh I like that idea, so the “additional info” dosen’t have to be an essay

it was actually lingering sinus infections due to inflamed adanoids, didn’t make a full week of school all first semester

also I think it could fall under “over coming adversity” atleast I know the personal issues can
