I was thinking about writing my common app personal essay on cheerleading. I hear a lot that this is cliche because it doesn't show a well-rounded person, only someone who is completely only obsessed with sports sports and more sports, and could care less about their schoolwork or any aspect of their future. However, I plan on doing pre-med in college, and make it very clear in my short answer section on the common app that I want to become a doctor. I get good grades, am applying to highly ranked colleges, and have pretty good test scores. Would an essay on cheerleading (assuming it is well-written) be too unoriginal, or would it set me apart?

Anybody who knows what they are talking about will tell you that it depends WHAT you write about cheerleading. That alone will determine whether it’s a standout essay.

I fully agree with shyams.

I cheer too. Honestly, I don’t think writing about cheer would give off the impression that you are obsessed with sports, even if you do sideline cheer only.

I also agree with everything said above - it does not matter what your topic is, what matters is how interesting, engaging and personal you can make it. Your cheerleading story shouldn’t sound like some one else’s story, it has to be tailored just for you.
