Personal Question

Although I feel a little ackward asking this question, I knew it would not only pertain to many CC Students here but also (possibly) help us. Being hard working students always striving to do better, I assume we all get stressed out regularly, causing acne. What works well for you? I've tried a lot of different things and only few have worked. Unfortunately, the medications which have worked for me also caused adverse side effects. (A family friend of ours tried Proactive Solutions and had really good luck with it; have any of you had similar experiences?)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/personal experiences/tips you may have to offer!

It's weird, if you knew me, you would think i'm perhaps the most stressed out person you've ever seen, though at least i've avoided acne for the most part. But yeah, my sister used Proactive and it worked really well for her, though i think it's one of those products that works really well or not at all, so I guess that would be my recommendation.

Go to a dermatologist and get a prescription for some kind of cream or something..

leah377, i tried that except the medicine along with my stress caused severe acidity problems so i had to stop that medicine.

I never had any major problems, but I was sick of buying new stuff so I went on birth control to mollify the monthy hormonal flucuations that actually caused the breakouts - so if you're female, that's definitely an option. Otherwise, ask about antibiotics in pill form at the dermatologist.

First I'd start with some type of topical cream combined with a strong acne fighting face wash. Differin is a really good topical cream, one that I've had personal experience with. Try it for a couple weeks, hopefully you'll see a noticeable difference. If not you can try other creams and/or face washes, sometimes some work better for you than others, but if all else fails and you still have pretty bad problems ask your dermatologist about Acutane. Acutane is a VERY strong medicine with VERY effective results.

Make sure you see a dermatologist though, see what he/she advises.

Proactiv worked really well for me when it was the worst (8th-9th grade)...though its effectiveness wears off with time.

Tetracycline is a good antibiotic (capsules)--it's not terribly strong, but it's good for managing (my mom has doctor friends since she's a nurse, so I pretty much have a constant prescription).

Nowadays, I just use Johnson and Johnson Morning Burst facial cleanser and take 500 mg of tetracycline a day. Haven't had a breakout in like a year.

www.acne.org is working for me. very simple.

I've stopped with overthecounter medicine. THey dont work for me. I've stopped with prescribed cleansers and lotions. They make my skin dry and I get more pimples --- which is EXACTLY waht's supposed to happen.. only for the first 2-3 weeks. When I used derma prescribed sutff, the adverse effects can go as long as 8 weeks.

I ordered some healthy organic pills over the internet for pimples. THey are the best. Special vitamin c pills - they dont screw with your hormones (which is what accutane does). And they have some vitamin e in them to reduce scarring. I'm slowly starting to see results.

A LOT of my friends have used accutane to clear up thier acne. Honestly, that stuff works like a miracle. I wasnt allowed to use it because my parents dont trust hormone-changing products which kinda sucks for me lol

I am so stressed out all the time, mostly with school and not having enough time to do everything and unlike some CCers, I tend to like more than 4 hours of sleep.

I tried Proactiv, but it didn't work for me... I guess it does work for some people, I'm just unlucky.

I got perscription Tetracycline from my regualar doctor, but that didn't seem to work.

In May I finally got sick of all my acne so I went to a derma. I must say it was a good choice. He prescibed Erythromycin-Benzoyl Peroxide Gel and regualar Erythromycin. At first I felt as if they were not going to work but it is getting better. Most of the scars are fading and I am breaking out less.

Basically ask your derma to prescibe something else... Its kinda trial and error until they get to the point you need Accutane.

Good Luck!!!

my sister has horrible acne problems so she's been through a ton. what works for her is benzaclin (which contains benzoyl peroxide and clyndamicin) dunno the exact spelling in the night and then tretinoin in the morning. when the breakouts get worse she takes medication but idk the name of it

Hehe, I lost all my acne (mainly on the back) when I started taking Birth Control. :-D

haha dont get differin their commercials dont make it sound too good.

something like "warning: itching, burning, scratching, severe pain, discomfort etc. may occur"

Whatever You Do Do Not Try Proactive. It Is A Waste Of Money. And I Mean It! I Tried It And It Did Not Work At All. Right Now I Am Using The Step Three Skin Cream From Nutrogena And It Works So Well!

please refrain from typing like that.

From what I've heard, Proactiv is hit and miss--it works great for some people, and is ineffective for others.

Actuaine. My brother used it, worked like a charm! Actuaine is really powerful and you would need to have a dermatologist to get it.

According to my dermatologist, Proactiv has one function, and does not treat all types of acne. It treats pimple formation, but not comydone (I'm sure I spelled that wrong).

I use the Proactiv face wash, Minocyclin (a Tetracyclin without some of the side effects), Duac, and Differin.

Ha. I took Minocyclin to treat seborrheic dermatitis. It worked, but it gave me a really horrible side effect — pseudotumor cerebri. I had blinding headaches, nausea, and double vision while taking my AP exams. Lovely.

My friend had absolutely miraculous results with Accutane. I think I've basically outgrown my acne. Right now I don't do anything but wash my face, and my skin is usually clear. If you're having consistent problems, definitely see a dermatologist. If you do start using a strong medication, make sure you drink tons of water so your skin doesn't get too dry.

Yikes! I think that kind of side effect is pretty rare, though, and I've been on it about two months with out problems. I mainly can't take ordinary Tetracylcin because it causes more stomach problems...and I think it might be stronger than I need, also, though I'm not sure.

Thank you all so much! Each of you had great tips and helpful advice. Thanks again.
