Personal Rec

Many of the schools my son is applying to want a personal rec, but they all use different forms. Can a coach write a letter of recommendation and attach it to the form? Should I call each school? There is no way that I can ask the lacrosse coach to fill out 5 different forms.

pick five different people.

You can check the following website to see if the 5 schools will accept the TABS Admissions Application Form. If yes, then you will be able to use the same recommendation form for each school.

I checked with all the schools my daughter applied to last year, to see if they accepted the form. The majority of the schools said yes, but all preferred their own form. 2 schools said no, she had to use their form.

You can still use the school’s regular form for the student application (essay question, etc..) but use the common application for the recommendations.

Here’s the website:
[TABS: How to Apply](http://www.schools.com/apply/usecommonapp.cfm)

I could use 5 different people, but my son’s strength is lacrosse so it would make sense to have the coach write his personal recommendation.

I did check for a common form, but there is no common personal recommendation. They all have different forms with the schools logo. We may have to do different people for the rec and then just have the coach write up a seperate letter of recommendation.

I would ask him to do it and give him 5 envelopes asking him nicely to copy it. One of ours says “you can use this form, or a letterhead.” If most will accept a letterhead, then he can do one letter and attach it to their form?

Usually the form is just a series of check-boxes and you could then attach the letter to it (it might be five separate forms, but there really isn’t much to the checking-off part). I agree that if lacrosse is your son’s strength and the coach knows him well and thinks highly of him, that he would make an excellent personal rec.

The personal or character commendations that we have seen this year are not the check boxes. The teacher and school recs are, but not thses.
It is confusing because there are also the non-academic teacher references as well, which DO have the check boxes.

My reply #9 in the above link addresses the specific concern you’re raising. The following link touches on the issue…and is an older thread you that may inspire some deja vu.

This is good news because it sounds like the lacrosse coach has come around to accepting the inevitability of this…right?

The lacrosse coach hasn’t come around, but my son’s latin teacher was the assistant coach last year. We are hoping to get him to do two of the recs as his latin teacher/lacrosse coach. He also went to St Paul’s and enjoys talking about his experience.

It’s actually a good thing that winter break is coming in 2 days because the varsity and select lacrosse coaches (both at my son’s school) have enlisted the support of the athletic director. My son is starting to really enjoy the attention. At least we know he is considered an important part of the team.
