How exactly and where do you feel at home at UCLA? I went and visited this past week, which was an awesome experience--there was just soo much going on, and it makes me excited, but i'm afraid i'll get caught up in materialistic or superfluous goals. Idk, I guess every inch of UCLA is full of fun and I kinda didn't see anywhere where i could have personal space to just think for myself and just mellow down.
Does anyone else feel this way?

I guess that's my first question. Second, there's a few things I want to try or continue in college... and i'm not sure whether to take a class, join a club, or just try it out with friends. I feel like UCLA, compared to a liberal arts college, wouldn't provide me with as many opportunities to participate in these extracurricular activities if I'm not already really good at it. For example, I really want to try out rock climbing and crew, and i'm not sure if i could join a club, because clubs are competitive? or are there different types of clubs?
Also, I've always wanted to take vocal lessons, but i'm not a music major, so could i take classes? Also, if i'm an engineering major, would i be able to take poetry classes? Hm. I hear that UCLA doesn't let you take classes outside your major, is that true?

“i’m afraid i’ll get caught up in materialistic or superfluous goals”
This is UCLA, not USC. There’s not much to be superficial about here =D

“I kinda didn’t see anywhere where i could have personal space to just think for myself and just mellow down.”
There are various places on campus you can go where there aren’t very many people, or none at all. It depends on how picky you are about where you want to be and what you want to be around you. You can also work out times with your roommates when you want to just chill by yourself in your room and even put it in your roommate contract (which everyone fills out at the beginning of the year).

The John Wooden Center has a rock climbing wall in it that is open to all students. You can go there almost any time the gym is open and rock climb to your heart’s content. Also, there’s an outdoor adventure club on campus that does this kind of thing. You can join that (and no, clubs aren’t competitive, they’re freaking clubs =P).

For engineering, go to
[HSSEAS OASA | Curricular Requirements and Department Information](http://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/current/deptinfo.html)
and look at the “Undergraduate Sample Plan” under your major. Those are all the classes you need to take and, wherever it says “HSSEAS GE Elective”, you sub in one of these classes, per the requirements:
http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/GE/GE-EngrNew08-09.pdf
If you look through those, chances are there’s something in there that would fit in what you want.

I haven’t heard anything about not being allowed to take classes outside your major, so I can’t say for sure. What is your major?

they make you take GE classes, where you pick out of a ton of categories of classes the one you want

and what do you mean take classes outside your major, the whole purpose of college is to take classes for your major lol
