Personal Statement and its importance

so... how important is it for transfer student? I heard that if you already have a high gpa, they won't even look at it... is it true? is it true for UCB and UCLA?

AdamantineX there is some truth to your statement, but they will look at your essay. Students will high gpa will have a better chance of getting in. The essay is a chance to explain our situation ,ie. students that is on the edge of the cut or grade trends.

if ur talking about competitive majors
tons of people have 4.0
its ur essay that will let u stand out

if ur talking about science majors and such they don't REALLY focus on ur writing ability but they want to see good writing abilities in other majors
like english majors... duh

so yea

reps told me UC Berkeley, LA and Santa Cruz are the only UCs to take essays into consideration. All other UCs won't even read it. It's a strong statement, I know, but a Davis rep and a UCSD rep both told me that when I asked.

yeah i would expect the top UCs like cal and LA to read since their decision can be close and borderline and they use the essays to make their final decision, dam i spent the whole summer writing and revising the 3 essays for winter transfer, now there are only 2 and they made the second one more specific and the third one becomes optional, so i'm applying for the fall again so maybe and will use the same essays but will expand a little on them since i think i'm applying to LA though i doubt i'll get in, i got into Santa cruz for winter so maybe it had something to do with my essays. So wait they don't read it just for transfers or do they don't read the freshman essays too?

if you read this doc, you'll see that only UCLA, UCB, UCI, and UCM use the personal statement to evaluate transfers from cc for admission. but other campuses consider it to award scholarships and evaluate gaps in education

yeah that sucks, you spend a lot of time brainstorming, writing, and revising, and it may all be for nothing
