I keep seeing people say you shouldn’t use metaphors in your personal statement. Are people referring to generic, popular metaphors or all metaphors in general? Can you use your own metaphors that relate specifically to you?
It’s your statement. You can use whatever you want.
But you risk having them think - yet another cliche essay.

Avoid being cliche and don’t attempt to write what you think someone wants to read.
