Personal Statement Question

For my Personal Statement do I want to mention the specific UC I am applying to(UCB)?

i was wondering the same thing, also just adding onto this question if we apply to multiple schools should we say something about each school or just say “the university of california” so we dont have to be specific?

Are you applying to more than one? I didn’t mention any UC in mine. I was asked about my major and what made me want to pursue it. That is what they wanted to know. I wouldn’t mention any specific UC but that is my advice.

If you are only applying to one UC then why not, but if you’re applying to more than one then yes, don’t mention an individual school

I agree with above. For it gives admission officer the impression about how valuable you think of their school. If that is what you wish to pursue, go for it I say.

if we want to state the reason why we transfer (ucsd to UCB), then which essay should we state it in? I’m assuming it’s the 2nd one (since the first one is about majors) but then 2nd one asks you about your accomplishment and talents so i dont know how to put my transferring reasons in it. and does it matter if we don’t say the reason at all?

In prompt 1, you could explain why your destination school is better for your major than your original school.

What you could do is that you could tailor them a bit, make a sentence specifically about… oh let’s say UCLA, and send that one to UCLA and then not include that sentence in your other apps, or tailor them to each individual school, just subbing in UCSD, UCB, UCSB, etc for UCLA. I was curious about this myself

Um, one application is sent to all schools. That’s one essay (the same essay) to all the schools you apply too. When you fill out your app, you just check of the one’s you want your application to be sent too, and then you pay.

One thing I’ve considered doing is talking about all the schools I’m applying to:

“The University of California has great professors at every campus. I enjoyed Berkeley professor John Doe’s 2008 article on birds. I’m fascinated by UCLA professor Jane Doe’s work at zoos, and would love the opportunity to learn from her. UCSD’s John Smith is an authority on parrot communication, the best in the field.”

Clunky, and I’m not going to end up doing it myself, but if you absolutely want to find a way, this may be it.

@nikki alright, thank you for that, I never actually applied to a UC before so I wasn’t familiar with the process, good to know because in my second draft I mentioned UCLA specifically, I’ll remember to make that school-neutral from now on.

@EVERYONE: Be really careful with that. A former admissions counselor at UCLA told me that mentioning a school’s name is the biggest mistake you could ever make. Schools want to hear about what you can offer them and the world- they already know what they can offer you.

At the same time, we’re all different and if you really want to try, do and let me know how it goes.

Hey, do the personal statement questions change annually? Because I have a month of nothing, so I’d like to start on it. (I’m an upcoming freshman)

They change every so often, but not every year. Last year’s questions will almost certainly be this year’s.
