Personal Statement: Quick Question

Hi,

Somewhere on the UC website, it states that the minimum length of any given essay is 250 words. However, they cite a maximum of 1000 words for both essays combined. Does anyone know what the minimum recommended word total is for both essays? Currently I'm at around 720 words for both essays combined.

Thanks for the help :)

You are fine as far as a minimum goes but I would worry that you aren’t providing as good of essay as you could leaving so many words on the table implies you aren’t giving much or delving into much or fully expressing all the things asked for in essay 1. Maybe you are, but in my experience people are usually bursting with things to say and have to pare down. Perhaps the scope of your essay is too narrow is all I’m saying.

If you deliver what you want to say while keeping it succinct, I’m sure the reader won’t have a problem with that.

Ah, okay, I see. Thanks for the advice! I bumped each essay up to around 420 words for a total of 840. I’ll see if I can expand on them even more.

Don’t just add for the sake of adding words. A very good solid to the point essay can be written in 250 words. And if you try to add extra fluff to it, sometimes, it loses its ebb and flow. Visit the college essay forum for the tips. But in a nut shell, each sentence you write should tell something about you. It should show new something to the reader and not sound repetitive.

Thanks for the advice! Will do.
