So - I'm applying to the UC campuses with two different majors. For Berkeley, UCLA and UC Santa Barbara I'm applying under Sociology. With UC San Diego (TAG) and UC Santa Cruz, I'm applying under Political Science.

Ideally, I'd like to go to law school afterwards and I'm interested in these two fields. Is it best not to mention political science since Berkeley and UCLA take essays into a good consideration as opposed to the others?

Just write about Sociology. You are basically guaranteed into UCSD if your TAG is legit and UCSC puts little weight on the personal statement (if they even read it at all).

You could write about both! A major in Political Science and a major in Sociology have something in common: a desire to know more about the institutions, interactions, cultural structures, government systems, businesses, blah blah blah that make society function. Write about your interests, then connect the major. A college major is just a piece of rhetoric anyway.

I agree with sega18, write about both. Find a way to incorporate both into your essay, mentioning your long term goals as well. However, I wouldn’t focus too much on sociology or political science as majors, but rather as your interests in giving back to the community and effecting positive change through socio-political pathways.

Thanks for all the comments. After much consideration, I’ve decided that I’m going to apply to ALL the UC’s under as a Political Science major - I wasn’t very drawn towards Sociology as I thought I was. I think I’ll write about a research program I did with UC Irvine - or I might volunteer in a law office soon and if I do I might incorporate that in my personal statement. I guess we’ll just have to see :)
