Personal statement struggles..

It is almost time to start on those personal statements and i've been struggling because i want to write something very unique or at least interesting but my life is just too average. My GPA and test scores are not that great so i really want to make this personal statement my pivotal point. I've been practicing and going over tips on personal statements in my College Prep English class, according to my teacher, she said that writing about divorce or family issues(my topic) is very stereotypical. Since i still won't have anything unique or interesting scenes in my life at the moment, is there any way i can at least strengthen this kind of topic and make it stand out from other average students in this situation?

Possible general topic of mine :
-Divorce/Separation
-Family issues
-Financial issues
-Sports (Water polo and Swim)
-Migration

P.S I also am not passionate about anything. There really isn't anything i "love" to do.

First off, I bet you ARE passionate about something in your life…but you just don’t think it would make a great essay topic. My son, who is a junior at Yale, wrote one of his essays about the bottomless pit of knowledge that is YouTube and everything he has learned from watching videos ranging from guitar playing to ping pong to physics. Any topic can be stereotypical if it’s generic and non-specific.

With regards to writing about your parents’ divorce – colleges don’t want to hear about all the difficult times you’ve had in your life. They want to hear about how you have become a better, stronger, more resilient person despite what you have been through. The want to know about the positive things you have learned from the experience, so your teacher is partially correct – writing about your parents’ divorce is stereotypical – but writing about how you have grown as a person is not.

How can i make that response stand out. To me, most of the response to divorce would still say something stereotypical like you mentioned, stronger person or something like that.

You don’t say you are a stronger person, you show that you are by your thoughts and deeds.
