<p>The AMCAS limits the length to a certain number of characters, something like 10,000 or so. I think mine was about a page and 2/3 single spaced, but I don't remember exactly.</p>
<p>I believe that the prompt is now "Why do you desire a career in medicine?" or something along those lines. When I was applying in 2004 there wasn't any prompt, but BDM said last year there was. You might check some place else like the forums at StudentDoctor where there are more people actually going through the process currently.</p>
<p>I think the character limit is 5300 char.</p>
