Personal Statements

My daughter will be a senior at a top 25 college/University. She has an excellent GPA and her LSAT scores are good. But she is going "crazy" over trying to write her personal statement. It seems everything she has read and/or heard contradicts each other.

Some schools ask for essays about "why law?," while others want to get to know you. She said she has had no significant events in her life that fit into law school and she is afraid her passion (dance) will seem silly. Her understanding is that the essay must be about something that happened while in college. I don't get that impression from my readings. She is very uptight about this, and I am wondering if anybody could give her some advice. She knows I am posting this with the hope that someone can help her.

I think you'll find the advice out there is conflicting. That said, I'd suggest your D read through Montauk's "How to Get Into the Top Law Schools," especially the chapter on PS's and the samples. There are LOTS of books out there--check Amazon. Also google and read the advice available on-line FROM REPUTABLE SOURCES, e.g., the pre-law advice given by various universities.

When LSs ask specific questions, answer the questions, but don't assume that you should submit the answers as a PS to LSs that do NOT ask "Why law school?" etc.
