Perspectives on Pomona (POP!)

I have been looking heavily into Pomona’s programs and I noticed this program. The application isn’t open yet, but I was wondering if any of you guys has ever utilized this. Do you know anything about this?

It seems to have been renamed from past years, but this is Pomona’s fly-in program for underrepresented groups; many peer schools offer similar programs. If you’re interested in Pomona and get invited, you should absolutely go. It’ll be a lot of fun and will give you much more insight into Pomona than anything else could.

the fly in programs are wonderful. My child DID NOT qualify, but i have heard from those that qualify and participated , that the fly in programs give students that do qualify(diverse, low income, first generation) the oppprtunity to be recruited to top colleges and to eliminate barriers like cost to get to see colleges as all expenses are paid including flights.

the application process is usually in the Fall. Like college applications, they usually require transcripts, essays, recommendations, standardized test scores. Usually if you are invited to a Fly In , its a good chance that you will be admitted to the college.

However, I do know that its not 100 percent. I know someone on CC that was invited and went for the Pomona fly in and got rejected from the Swarthmore fly in, but ultimately when they applied to colleges , got into Swarthmore and waitlisted at Pomona. Just saying, to not get discouraged if you don’t get into all the flyins you apply to . I heard if you apply to the flyins and don’t get accepted to the flyin, its still a great way to show demonstrated interest in the college and they sometimes give a waiver for the college application fee to their college.

The flyins are competitive. apply to many. Lots of top lac participate in fly ins including Pomona,Williams, Swarthmore and Bowdoin and many others. check out the link below.

if the link doesn’t work just google fly in programs

The fly-ins are definitely worthwhile, not just for demonstrating interest, but for determining if the school’s culture suits you and to see the real people and campus behind the marketing glossy brochures.

Just a reminder, application deadline for both of this year’s fly-in weekends is August 20: https://www.pomona.edu/admissions/learn-more/diversity-pomona/perspectives-pomona-pop

My daughter also did not qualify or bottom line did not get an invitation. However, she still got accepted to Pomona and will be a rising sophomore. Packing now as we speak. Don’t get discouraged if you apply, but don’t get an invitation to POP. Make a good application. You can still get in.

when do decisions come out?

@friendfiend Hi! That is my question also. Does anyone know?

Hmm, I’m not sure when decisions come out, but wanted to ask - is anyone else’s application submit date showing up incorrectly? I submitted mine about 10 minutes before midnight, but it’s saying that I turned it in on 8/21 rather than 8/20.

@nosebleeds I submitted my application a little bit after 9:00 PST on 8/20 and the submit date is also 8/21. However, I received a confirmation email from Pomona this morning (saying that they received my application) so I wouldn’t worry too much about it!

Oh phew! I was worried they were going to count my app as late. Thanks!

Has anyone contacted them to find out when decisions come out?

Decisions will be out by first week of September (maybe earlier)

@MaybeHarvard2022

Just curious, did you contact them and ask?

@YoLolololol I personally didnt, but a friend of mine did.

Few more days

Maybe today???

ah…did anyone call and ask specifically when decisions come out?

@friendfriendly
It will be out this week apparently. I say by Friday we should hear back.

hoping all on this thread that applied to the diversity fly in to Pomona gets in, but for those that don’t get good news it doesn’t mean you can’t get into Pomona or other schools you applied to for fly ins and didn’t get in. I know of some (from CC) that didn’t get into flyins and than went onto being accepted at the schools in the admission process and visa versa I know of some that got into flyins and later got wt listed from those same schools including Pomona.
certainly a good sign if you get in to a fly in but just putting a different perspective on it .

My S is now a Sophomore at Pomona and loves it. he did not qualify to apply for diversity fly ins but I did hear its a great opportunity to visit schools that might be cost prohibitive otherwise.
