Persuade me to go to Bing

@ Bing student, I do not disagree there is some medical research in Binghamton but I hardly doubt it is anywhere near SB campus where I know loads of research assoc with the best ideas in medicine. No doubt both campuses are great choices but for pre-med track, with a PA program, Physical Therapy program, Medical School and teaching
Hospital right on campus its truly a no-brainer.

BU Student Ambassador,

What you are mentioning is peanuts compared to what SBU students do, have the opportunity of doing, and the resources that are available. I don’t understand the inferiority complex of Bing students when one mentions your school is not strong in the Sciences? Be proud of your liberal arts, that’s what you were meant to do, and you are doing really well at it. I’m proud of how good Bing is in the Liberal Arts. However, when the conversation is about Science, as I mentioned in great detail before, it’s an insult to even compare SBU vs Bing, SBU is on a whole, completely different tier. SBU has resources that put’s it on par with Ivy-leagues, whom we directly compete with in Science. Stony’s Liberal Arts on the other hand, are in no way comparable to Bing’s.

So this is what it drills down to,

If(scienceSchool)
goStonyBrook();

else if(liberalArts)
goBingU();

Leave the Science for Stony Brook. We are heavily investing to be a top 20 Science school in the USA.

Once again, we should all clap our hands for our fellow SUNY institution, Stony Brook, that was ranked 4th in the most prestigious Math competition on earth. #1 Harvard, #2 MIT, #4 Stony Brook. We have had a spectacular decade in the Sciences, and this is the beginning.

Hopefully Stony Brook can continue innovating, like when we did the research for the MRI, while hopefully Bing can continue publishing great English books, and strengthening its business program.

QC, the Putnam doesn’t really show how good a university is, because you can’t really ‘train’ the students to do good. I’d say Stony just got a good batch of math kids for the team for that year. If they do it a second time, I’d reconsider my answer.

Ventura, it has to be with amazing faculty members, that literally trains our student. I’ll give you an example, Binghamton’s Computer Science club pulls all-nighters, and they try very hard to do well at the annual Computer Science competition[ACM], where the Ivy-leagues and 60 others meet, Stony Brook, thanks to it’s Science influence and far more, and world-renowned Professors[Think Steven Skiena, an Algorithms god], usually either kicks Princeton, Columbia, Yale butt, or we come in 2nd in the competition, Bing is usually somewhere in the bottom. We have more resources, more faculty, and more funding. There is just no comparison, the same way your business school is on a whole different tier, our Science are just only a whole different tier, most of your Science are in top 150ish, while we have some programs that are top 4 in the nation[Think Nuclear Physics]. From our hospital, dental school, medical school, the list just doesn’t end . . . . Besides, this isn’t our first time kicking Ivy-league butt, we’ve done it in the past by winning:

A)The International Student Cluster competition
B)Consistently ranking as top 3 in the ACM competition[most prestigious CS competition], and winning it, along with participating in the global finals.
C)Winning Robotics competitions consistently.
D)Now we have the Putnam under our belt.

Last but not least, we are admitting the best batch of students we’ve ever had admitted[in terms of grades], so only better things can be expected.

This is sort of common sense my friend, when you have a top 20 Math Program, national, a world-renowned Physics program, an amazing Applied Math program, Computer Science, and a list of other ‘Sciences’ such results are no longer ‘astonishing’. Had we written an amazing novel, your statement might held weight, like “Wait, SBU, great Business school? Let me see you do it again”. However, Science is something we’ve been doing for a while.

Aside from our Science rankings dwarfing Binghamton, and our alumni outcomes unparalleled vis-a-vis Binghamton, we have nobel prize Professors teaching here, think about it more rationally. From Chemistry, to Biology, I mean, we have towers devoted to our specialty. To give you an example, we have 4 buildings devoted to Computer Science alone, that’s the size of your entire Engineering school, plus a couple of other department. With size comes faculty, with size comes resources, with size comes massive funding and bright students. I mean, this isn’t something ‘new’, Google generally drives 50 miles away from Manhattan, just to visit our undergrad class to see what we are building, THIS TIME.

With due respect, I don’t understand the inferiority complex of parents who children go to Bing, or students at Bing – Be proud of your school, you are great at Business, and Liberal Arts. Don’t act like you are a Science-oriented school, that job is left for Stony Brook, where with the help of our thousands of scientists at Brookhaven National Lab, and our on-campus resources, we are doing cutting-edge Scientific work. Our Nobel prize Professors are trying to look for scientific breakthroughs, while our peers at Bing might be working on the next great English book, or something Liberal Arts related.

Funny story. My son, who is in in his freshman year at Binghamton, got a mailing yesterday from Stony Brook wanting him to attend. Interesting.

It became hilarious when I dug down deeper in the mail to see my wife got the same invitation. She’s been out of school a couple of decades.

So what’s the deal Q? Is Stony Brook so desperate for students that it is trying to recruit from other schools, including the recruitment of their moms?

Are layoffs pending unless enrollment numbers improve?

Is that why you’re here on a Bing. thread promoting Stony Brook?

ChrisPaul - I was like you choosing between Bing or Stony Brook. I visited both schools and came out impressed. However I found Bing to be too artsy, they were promoting LACs over and over to the point that I fell asleep. The campus housing looks good but besides going there for Business or for college parties there’s no point in going there.

I chose Stony Brook because it was strong in what I wanted to pursue and when I visited the campus, the demos were good and the professors detailed how it was going to be challenging and useful. I got none of the LAC and its vagueness feeling. It remains to be seen how it is when school starts but all indications are is that it is good.

Thanks TicTac, I am a University Scholar btw. I am choosing Stony for its strength in medicine but I hope its not too late to get into my preferred dorm (Roth Quad)
