I am so sad that I didn’t know about this college and policy when I was in high school!
Very, very cool.
On the one hand I love the idea of the kids getting to bring their pets with them, on the other hand I feel like they have so much to focus on with college that the animals might not get the attention they deserve. And I wonder just how gross that litter box will get without Mom there to scoop it? (says the mom who has to scoop the litter box now and has declared a no-replacement policy for the pets in the house).
Love it!
There is a pet council, (students) that oversees any complaints and reviews requests, policies, etc.
What kind of degrees are they getting?
I am a complete sucker for this. Knowing about Eckherd’s pet policy would have had an undue influence on my college applications.
Not to be a killjoy, but I’m horribly allergic to dogs/cats etc. (not just sneezing, but throat closing up, eyes close up, breathing problems) and a policy like this would have been horrible for me. Hopefully the school has pet-free dorms but it certainly would have limited my ability to go to friends’ dorms etc. I admit it is cute, but hopefully the needs of all students are considered.
My son’s dorm floor was pet friendly. The pets never graduate.
Stetson also allows pets in the dorms.
The pet dorms was one of the deciding factors for my D choosing Eckerd. Her dogs will stay home, but she’s looking forward to playing the other student’s pets.
AEAmom, welcome to the Eckerd “family”. The pet dorms are separate from other dorms.
This was one big plus when D was looking at colleges. She loved the pet dorm. She decided to go elsewhere, but the accepting and friendly vibe was a definite draw.
I was unaware such dorms existed. I would have loved a dog on campus. Now I’ll expect a future CC thread asking “Rank pet-friendly colleges by prestige”.
Next we will get a post from somebody whose pet doesn’t want to walk at graduation.
And stories about pets expelled from colleges.
And complaints about pets bringing BF/GF to the dorm rooms.
And wild pet parties - you know - with off campus animals.
We know a girl who specifically applied to pet friendly schools because she has anxiety issues and while not an official service dog, her lap dog has made a huge difference in her ability to cope.
D’s college brings in puppies every finals week for stress relief and it’s a huge hit.
I admit I wouldn’t want to live in a pet friendly dorm myself and our big country dog would be miserable but I can see the value and certainly think pet graduations are adorable.
If a list is started, I’ll add Stephens College, in Columbia, MO as a pet friendly campus.
hi ECmom do you know if the pet dorms have refurbished common rooms?
